Because I’m one billion years old and was running a celebrity gossip site at the time, I distinctly remember when Jessica Simpson was being raked over the coals as Dallas Cowboys fans became convinced that she was distracting Tony Romo. The Cowboys losing games? What a strange and unusual predicament. It must be a woman’s fault!
Fast forward to this week where Taylor Swift is starting to get a taste of the NFL worm turning. Here’s the thing, though: The Chiefs have yet to lose a game this season, and Swift wasn’t even at their last matchup against the Falcons to jinx anybody. So what’s the problem? Apparently, Travis Kelce is having a slow start.
I know what you’re thinking: “Mike, didn’t you just say yesterday that you’re not a football guy in your Kyle Chandler post? How do you even know what’s going on here?” Allow me to clarify, I’m not a football guy anymore. I was until 2009, thanks to going to college outside of Pittsburgh, where if you wanted to get with Western PA girls, you better be into Steelers football. (Spoiler alert: I wanted to get with Western PA girls.)
That fandom lasted after graduation and into the early years of my marriage before it ultimately smacked into the Ben Roethlisberger conundrum a.k.a. all the rape. Watching NFL fans with wives and daughters say things like, “All I care about is what he does on the field,” was enough to turn me off the game for good followed by Steubenville and the nuclear bomb at Penn State that practically exploded in my backyard.
Anyway, Kelce is getting blasted for not having enough interceptions or whatever, and you can already see where this is going. Via New York Post:
While NBC’s Cris Collinsworth called out the lack of “magic” between Kelce and star Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, former ESPN personality Todd McShay zoned in on other elements surrounding the All-Pro tight end’s highly publicized life.“Every show I watch, every pregame show, halftime show, postgame show, weekday show, every broadcast I watch for the last few weeks, it’s like are we not allowed to say that he’s out of shape, that he’s been partying all offseason? He’s been jet-setting around with the most famous person probably in the entire world, that he’s drinking, going to the U.S. Open,” McShay said Monday on “The Ryen Russillo Podcast,” referencing Kelce and girlfriend Taylor Swift’s escapades earlier this month.
This slow start business has gotten loud enough that Kelce’s mom has come out swinging. Here’s what she told PEOPLE:
“You know, I don’t think they realize the pressure that people are under, whether they’re athletes or professionals that are in front of the camera. And it’s just very difficult, there’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes,” she says. The tight end’s mother adds, “You don’t realize how many times people are trying to keep you from catching the ball, or trying to trip you up or hit you… so it’s kinda hard when you’ve got people that are in your face 24/7.”
I write about superheroes and Jennifer Lopez from my goddamn basement, so I’m not about to judge any athlete. Let alone one who’s dating Taylor Swift. If the dude wants to tank his entire football career for the biggest pop star on the planet, go with God, my friend. There are way worse decisions to make in life, and trust me I made them. In Western PA.
Speaking of Taylor, she’s obviously in a much better position than Jessica Simpson, who was at the tail end of her music career while dating Tony Romo. The NFL courted Swift, and I feel comfortable saying the league needs her way more than she needs it. She will be fine if the “dads, Brads, and Chads” start accusing her of cursing the Chiefs or some shit. They can die mad from arteries chock full of bratwurst.
Is it weird that sentence made me hungry? That’s gotta be weird.
