For years, a random-ass story has bounced around the internet about the time T.I. saved Creed frontman Scott Stapp from an alleged suicide attempt in 2006. Originally, the source of the story was Stapp himself who claimed he was on a drug binge, but the celebrity rescue took on new life last month when T.I. recounted his version of events to GQ and pushed it back into the headlines:
I was outside in Miami, at the Shore Club, and I was stepping outside my balcony, about to fire up my blunt, me and my partner Big Phil. I just heard moaning and groaning from up on top of the roof area. I’m looking at Phil and I’m like, “Are you hungry?” I thought it was his stomach because Phil was always hungry. And he was like, “Man, that ain’t me.” And we continue to smoke, and then [moaning sound]. So I step out and look down and don’t see nothing. And then I look up and—“Oh shit, it’s a white man up there!” [laughs] That’s what really shocked me. Blood shows up real good on a white man. So I’m like, “He’s bloody, fucked up.” And he’s like, “Those motherfuckers, I’mma get ‘em, I’mma get ‘em.” And he tried to get up and he fell back down. Clearly his leg was broken or something. And he told us the story about how he thought his girlfriend was cheating on him with his best friend. He tried to jump from 14—and I think we were probably the sixth floor, something like that. And he was trying to continue to jump. And we was like, “No, no, no. Don’t do that.” So basically, I offered him the J, but he couldn’t reach me. So I said, “I tell you what, I’ll let you hit it if you let me call somebody to get you down.” So he let us call somebody to get him down. And I didn’t know it, but that was Scott Stapp from Creed.
Wait. If T.I. bribed Stapp with weed, does that mean he took him… higher? (I’ll go lay out in traffic.)
Except, now, Stapp is saying he didn’t try to commit suicide, and it was simply an accident when his body fell from a balcony. But T.I. was definitely there!
TMZ reports:
Scott says he’d had an accident when T.I. found him bleeding out on a balcony at the famed Delano Hotel, but says it was NOT an attempt to take his life.T.I.’s memory of the event has become music folklore, but Scott doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he gushed about how the ATL rapper really was a guardian angel of sorts.
Of course, this differs from not only T.I.’s story but the original version that Stapp told in 2012, where he admits to attempting suicide and recalls the even more random and spectacularly early aughts reason for how they first met.
From Page Six (emphasis mine because just… mwah… chef kiss):
“I had met T.I. back in 2004, we were both writing songs for ‘The Passion of The Christ: Songs Inspired By’ soundtrack and we had briefly interacted there and knew what each looked like. We’d talked about being fans of Alabama … It’s ironic — he walked in, and I found out later it was the only room left in the hotel and he came in off the street and came out, and as I’m lying on the ledge, blood fell to [T.I.’s] feet and he looked up and he had an Alabama hat on.”“I said, ‘roll tide,’ and then he looked at me and put two and two together and really saved my life.”
“We were both writing songs for The Passion of The Christ: Songs By soundtrack.” Holy. Shit. What was that even like?
MEL GIBSON: Tip, you’re up first. I think you’re gonna love this beat.
T.I.: “Money, hoes, cars and clothes, that’s how all the Jews killed Jesus.” Whoa, wait a minute.
MEL: Dope, dope. Alright, Scott, you’re up next.
SCOTT: “With blood wide open… Jesus is dying… Vatican II is a lie… I’ll show you the PASSION OF THE CHRIST!”
MEL: Hell yeah! ROCK.
Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. And now here’s this thing, which is almost as weird as whatever the hell I just did.
