It’s a small gesture, but a very sweet one, as Ryan Gosling took to Vine and ate a bite of cereal yesterday.
That bite of cereal means more than you might think. Gosling was honoring the late Ryan McHenry, who recently passed away after a two-year battle with bone cancer. McHenry had gained some Internet fame back in 2013 with a series of Vines that made it appear as though Ryan Gosling had rejected cereal.
McHenry developed bone cancer soon after the release of that first Vine. Because of that Internet fame, McHenry managed to develop a fairly large following. Because the Internet is sometimes a very good and positive force in the world (no, really! It’s true! It can be!), it was that following that helped McHenry both emotionally and financially make the best of his time left on the planet (many had helped him to raise $10,000 for an operation on his leg).
Seeing Gosling eat a bite of cereal was the culmination of McHenry’s passion project, and while that may seem awfully small in the grand scheme, these little things can often mean so much to an individual.
My heart goes out to all of Ryan McHenry's family and friends. Feel very lucky to have been apart of his life in some small way.— Ryan Gosling (@RyanGosling) May 5, 2015
RIP Ryan McHenry. The next bowl of cereal I eat will be in your honor, sir.
