It’s been a busy year for celebrity splits, so it’s nice to see some potentially new romances blossoming during this strange season. Enter Rami Malek, Oscar-winning star of Mr. Robot, and Emma Corrin, Emmy nominee from The Crown. The pair were seen getting cozy at lunch in London, and had been photographed together at a Bruce Springsteen gig. The Daily Mail (yeah, I know) said the pair had been on ‘a string of dates.’ Both actors are pretty private and unlikely to issue any statements confirming a relationship, so the newspapers are jumping to the same conclusion. It’s no surprise that they are. Two famous people are seen hanging out in public with their faces sort of touching, so they must be doing it. It is a lot easier for stars to step out together and let everyone do the PR work for them.

This story is also gaining traction because it seems to be the most solid confirmation we have that, after a few months of quiet rumours, Malek has split from his partner of five years, Bohemian Rhapsody co-star Lucy Boynton. They met while making one of the worst films ever committed to the big screen, and Malek thanked Boynton in his Best Actor acceptance speech (lord, remember that Oscar season? Dark times.)

The press is also, predictably, getting their dog whistles ready for this rumoured romance because Corrin is non-binary and we live on TERF Island. That Daily Mail report had to include Corrin’s gender identity in its headline as if to warn off people that something odd was afoot. None of us have the energy or inclination to explain to transphobe mouth-frothers that gender and sexuality are not the same thing. Corrin is definitely too cool for that crap.

So yeah, a new good-looking, well-dressed celebrity couple with impressive silverware on their shelves. It also lines up nicely with history because Princess Diana, whom Corrin played in The Crown, was friends with Freddie Mercury! There’s an amazing story that he took her to gay bars, disguising her as a man so nobody would recognize her. That’s history right there, kids.
