Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars was a guest on a recent episode of the Call Her Daddy Podcast, where she opened up about her struggles with alcoholism.
“The first time I ever had alcohol … I was probably 12, or 13? I was in Florida, on vacation … and we drank Green Apple Pucker,” she said. “I blacked out—at 12 years old. I don’t remember what happened; I threw up, I got very sick, and I remember being so distraught when I realized what had happened.”
She said that she drank “here and there” from the age of 12 to 18, but it got worse in her early 20s. “I remember shame after every experience drinking, because my drinking was never normal. Literally every time I drank … it was very clear I was drinking to escape something, even at a young age.”
“I didn’t realize I had a problem until my early 20s,” she explained, and that’s when she realized how much it was on her mind, and how uncomfortable she felt going out and not drinking.
“I went to rehab when I was 23,” she admitted, explaining that no one from Pretty Little Liars knew, which was her choice.
While rehab was “pivotal,” she didn’t officially get sober until she was 32. She is now 34. She said she tried many different treatments, but none of them stuck, which she blames on being a celebrity in her 20s and feeling pressured to go out and be seen with her famous friends who had similar issues. But she wanted to stop. “I was so deeply ashamed of myself and my choices and the person who I was when I drank,” she said.
This is the first time Hale has spoken publicly about her journey to sobriety. She says part of what finally got her clean was getting sick with COVID-19, “which forced her to stay in, lay low, and avoid a lot of the social situations that would often lead to heavy drinking.” She says that’s how she was able to finally commit to it for good.
She explained that she had several relationships end because of her drinking and that several partners told her she had a drinking problem, but since getting sober she’s reconnected with some of them and feels she’s been given an opportunity to hold herself accountable and make amends.
“It’s the best thing to be clear-eyed and feeling good and to get to reconnect with people.”
