It’s been six years since Phoebe Bridgers released a solo album, so hype for her latest release, Lost Weekend, is high. The boygenius member and queen of the indie rock-pop scene is a critical darling with several Grammys to her name and a growing fanbase of devotees, which includes Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney. Another big fan is Gracie Abrams, who has frequently cited Bridgers as an inspiration in her own music. Some meaner critics have said she’s a poor imitation of Bridgers.
Another thing both women have in common is Paul Mescal. Bridgers dated him for about two years and he appeared in one of her music videos, and now he’s been with Abrams since 2024. In Lost Weekend, Bridgers alludes to the collapse of her romance with Mescal, singing on the title track, “I’m supposed to be married but I called it off.” On another song, “The Governor’s Waltz,” she sings what is already being interpreted as a swipe at Gracie. “She can pretend to be me // Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage.” Ooft! The good people of the Fauxmoi subreddit noted that Gracie used a bedroom set prop in a live performance that featured a bedframe and sheets that are very close to those of Phoebe’s childhood bedroom.
I love a good bitchy alt-girlie feud. See, Taylor, this is how you should have responded to Charli XCX instead of that nonsense “ohmigod, you must be in love with me” crap. I want some floral bitchiness. I crave the sad bedroom pop fury of the women who grew up idolizing Joni Mitchell. Maybe this is what will finally inspire Gracie to pick a personality and make some music I can actually remember. Phoebe’s been in a relationship with Bo Burnham for about four years now, so I’m sure she’s doing fine, but I do love some low-stakes pot stirring.
Hey, is this why Bridgers doesn’t want phone use at her concerts? She’s going to spill all of the drama and nobody will be able to record it? I love the arts.
