No, Chappell Roan Does Not Owe You a Selfie or a Hug Just Because She's Famous

Last October, I took my daughters to see Olivia Rodrigo in concert. She was very good, and at times, she was even a little metal. I also recently realized that it would not have been OK for a middle-aged man to go to an Olivia Rodrigo concert without his daughters no matter how metal she was.

We were also very lucky to see Chappell Roan open for Rodrigo. This was about two or three weeks before Roan really started to break out in a big way, and she was likewise phenomenal, though I realize now that we’ll never be able to see her again for less than several hundred dollars. Would it be OK for me to go watch Chappell Roan without my kids? Probably not!

But you know what else is even less OK? Randomly approaching Roan and asking for a selfie or a hug. When it comes to celebrities, this sort of behavior has become normalized, probably because people take to social media and shame celebrities if they won’t stop for every random on the street and pose for a selfie.

Chappell Roan, however, is done with it. She spoke last month about her uncomfortable relationship with her newfound fame and the clingy fans that come along with it. Now the singer has taken to Instagram to tell people to stop coming up to her and asking for pictures and hugs. “I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous, whatever. I don’t care that it’s normal,” she said.

“That doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it, doesn’t mean that I like it. I don’t want whatever the f**k you think you’re supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. I don’t give a f**k if you think it’s selfish of me to say no for a photo or for your time or for a hug — that’s not normal, that’s weird!”

Do not assume this is directed at someone or a specific encounter. This is just my side of the story and my feelings.

She is not wrong. Some celebrities like the attention of randos (Conan O’Brien comes to mind), but writing a popular song and performing in front of thousands of people does not give a stranger on the street the right to demand anything of you.

It’s important to note that I am not famous. But if you ever see me in public with my kids, please approach and harass me because I have been trying to convince my kids for years that I am famous, and they just roll their eyes at me. Hurtful!
