By now you know that Chappell Roan, arguably the biggest pop star of the past couple of years, has been going through it during her rapid rise to fame. She’s been dealing with stalking, harassment, unwanted touching, and other inappropriate treatment from fans, and she’s detailed all of these experiences on her social media accounts. In her latest Rolling Stone profile, she explained that her stalker was someone she met in her home state of Missouri, and the situation has now risen to the level of the person being seen outside of her family’s home and showing up at her hotel room in New York.
“So now I have to have security. It’s so lame,” she said. Another incident of a fan growing angry when she refused to sign an autograph resulted in the police being called. “I got home and dropped to my knees,” she explained of the incident. “I have a hard time crying now because of my meds, but I sobbed and I was screaming.”
She says many of her female musical peers have reached out to show support and offer advice, including Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Hayley Williams, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lorde, and all of the boy geniuses.
Mitski emailed her to commiserate: “I just wanted to humbly welcome you to the shittiest exclusive club in the world, the club where strangers think you belong to them and they find and harass your family members.” The “boys,” however, have been less present.
“Not a lot of boys have been like, ‘Let me know if you ever want to talk about it,’” she explained, the exceptions being Orville Peck, Troye Sivan, and Noah Kahan.
It’s notable that most of the musicians reaching out to her, regardless of gender, are recent success stories. People like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have been around this block several times, obviously, but I’m seeing the next generation of great music here. None of them hold a candle in the wind, though, to Chappell’s fiercest defender, Elton John.
“I am very protective of her,” John said. “She is kind, innocent and wonderful. She is not ‘Chappel Roan’ offstage—a bit like me. She is one of those people who I felt like I have known for a long time.”
Hopefully, we don’t have to have this little chat again, but I’m not holding my breath.
