Minka Kelly’s upcoming memoir Tell Me Everything reveals details about her past relationships with, among others, Derek Jeter, Trevor Noah, Chris Evans, and John Mayer, but she writes about one by name: Taylor Kitsch. The memoir goes into detail about her failed romance with her Friday Night Lights co-star, whom she dated off and on during her four-year stint on the series, despite Peter Berg’s warning to stay away from Kitsch once he saw their chemistry together.

The relationship did not go well. She admits that she and Kitsch “shacked up” too quickly and that their off-screen relationship became toxic. “Life became very difficult both on and off set whenever we broke up,” she writes. “We were young and had very few tools to handle our emotions and personal grievances. On the days we had to work together and were broken up, he didn’t want to be in the hair and makeup trailer at the same time I was. We couldn’t ride in the van together from base camp to set for the same reason. On those days, the tension on set was high and everyone felt the awkwardness.”

Kelly describes in the book how it caused a distance between her and the other actresses on the show because she spent most of her time with Kitsch instead of getting to know her female co-stars better. Kelly also writes about the lack of support she received from her castmates when she broke it off with Kitsch. “I’d show up to work with a smile on my face thinking I was being professional, while everyone else felt sorry for the guy whose heart had just been broken. My co-workers weren’t taking me out for drinks after work to mend my broken heart; they were taking him out.”

Kelly understood why, however: Kitsch was more open with their castmates than Kelly. Still, she says the relationship taught her a lesson about openness and vulnerability. “Vulnerability begets connection, as evidenced by the outcome of both our coping mechanisms. My tough-guy approach only left me alone. If you behave as if you need no one, if no one around you knows any better, most certainly, no one will, in fact, be there.”

The 42-year-old Kelly has no ill will toward Kitsch, writing that they were “very young and very sensitive.” Tell Me Everything arrives on May 2nd.
