The rollercoaster that is Lizzo’s life has offered up a new twist. Yesterday, a former stylist hit Lizzo with another new lawsuit, alleging an “unsafe, sexually charged workplace culture.”

On the very same day, Lizzo took the stage to accept the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the Black Music Action Coalition’s gala. She wasn’t shy about accepting it, either. “I’m going to continue to amplify the voices of marginalized people because I have a microphone and I know how to use it,” she said.

The trophy was handed to her by cast members from her show, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls. Recall that two of her dancers from the same show were among the first to file a lawsuit against her. The rest of the cast, however, did not withhold praise. “She loves with her whole heart,” said one cast member.

Three of her former backup dancers — Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez — had earlier filed lawsuits against Lizzo for alleged sexual and racial harassment. More recently, fashion designer Asha Daniels accused Lizzo and her team of creating a “racist and sexualized” work environment. Daniels claimed in her suit that while Lizzo preached body positivity on stage, she subjected her employees to harassment and bullying.

Stefan Friedman, Lizzo’s rep, called the claims “bogus, absurd publicity-stunt lawsuits.”

Meanwhile, Lizzo’s speech highlighted her $250,000 donation to various Black-led groups. Seemingly acknowledging the suits against her, Lizzo also said in her speech, “I needed this right now, God’s timing is on time,” as is, apparently, God’s sense of irony.

Past winners of The Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award include The Weeknd.
