Move over Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. A brand new celebrity beef just dropped, and it’s messy as hell.

This morning, Larry David went on Today to promote the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Before his scheduled appearance, he walked onto the set (off-camera), and spotted Elmo getting interviewed by Craig Melvin, Savannah Guthrie, and Hoda Kotb. The three-year-old Rocco-hating red monster was there with his father, Louie, to talk about mental health (see: his “How is everybody doing?” Twitter thread earlier this week and Stephen Colbert’s Trauma Me Elmo).

As the interview wrapped up, Savannah attempted to throw it over to Al Roker for a weather report. But Al’s forecast was interrupted by some unexpected violence. Out of nowhere, Larry David ran onto the set and physically attacked Elmo. He squeezed the poor little guy’s face as everyone watched on in horror. The bald f*ck also took a swing at Daddy Louie. As quickly as the incident began, it was over. Larry proudly strutted off the stage, and Elmo yelled, “Mr. Larry, Elmo loved you before!” But not anymore.

After Craig told Larry to “ask permission before you touch people,” Elmo invited the comedian to “get back on the couch and talk about how you feeeeling!” Oh, that’s not a good idea, Elmo. In response to Savannah telling him he went too far, Larry said, “Somebody had to do it.” Jesus Christ. A shaken-up Louie commented that he was going to sue for assault. And that’s his goddamned right as an American monster.

Later in the show, when Larry sat down for his interview, Savannah asked if there was anything he wanted to say to Elmo “from your heart.” “From where?” replied a laughing Larry. But, eventually, he settled down and apologized to Elmo in a dramatic split-screen moment. Elmo graciously accepted because he’s Elmo. A real mensch.

Here’s the attack, which Today distastefully uploaded to their official YouTube:

And here’s Elmo talking about the importance of checking up on your friends:

But who’s checking up on Elmo? Daddy Louie better get his baby to a therapist (and a monster hospital) ASAP.
