Kevin Spacey has been acquitted of all nine charges of sexual assault against four men in his U.K. criminal trial. After more than 12 hours of deliberation, the jury delivered their verdict. The charges against Spacey ranged from unwanted touching to aggressive fondling, and performing oral sex on an unconscious man. The alleged incidents occurred between 2001 and 2013, primarily during his tenure as the artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theater.

Originally, there were 12 charges against Spacey, but an additional count of indecent assault was added during the proceedings. However, the indecent assault charges were eventually dropped due to a “legal technicality,” whatever that means.

Spacey denied all accusations. The prosecutor labeled Spacey as a “sexual bully” who abused his celebrity status to exploit others and alleged that he reveled in their vulnerability and discomfort.

Spacey believes that potential employers are ready to hire him now. That seems unlikely given the unsettling testimony delivered during the trial, where his accusers called him a “vile sexual predator,” “slippery” and “atrocious, despicable, and disgusting.” Despite dozens of accusations, however, no jury has yet convicted Spacey, although one accuser died before the trial was set to begin.

I am disappointed but not surprised. Wealth provides a lot of protection, even in the UK’s court system. The same celebrity status that allowed him to exploit victims (allegedly) also allowed him to escape consequences.
