Justin Long’s podcast Life Is Short was an especially long episode this week (nearly 2 hours) because the guest was particularly special to the host. Justin Long had on his fiancée, Kate Bosworth, and the subject material was rather distinct from all the other episodes, as well. Justin Long and Kate Bosworth spent much of their 2 hours together talking about their relationship.

It was a lot. I like Justin Long and Kate Bosworth. I love romance! They’re a great couple. It was still a lot. The infamously commitmentphobic Long is clearly infatuated with Bosworth, and Bosworth is clearly in love with Long, although her personality seems to have been deeply shaped by her divorce from director Michael Polish. It’s a big topic of conversation. But mostly, it’s a conversation between a couple that is deeply in love, recorded almost as though there weren’t an audience. At one point, Bosworth even says, “You’re listening to us as though we are in our living room.” They talk about how they sleep tangled up in one another, how they evolved from friends into romantic partners, and lots of, “I remember when we did ________,” or “I remember when I told you _________.”

It’s a lot.

But during the course of that podcast, they also confirmed that they are engaged. In fact, Justin Long asked Bosworth’s dad for his blessing, and then he blew up his original plan to ask her and basically just asked her in bed.

“We were trying to move through things at the time and [our therapist] gave us a really great piece of advice, which was, ‘Make sure that you’re pretty consistently asking the other what you need, or asking the other what they need,’” Bosworth said during the podcast.

“I remember waking up not so many mornings after that therapy session and I looked at Justin … I smiled at you, and I said, ‘What do you need?’” Bosworth added. “And he really looked at me and he said, ‘To spend my life with you.’ And I smiled and I said, ‘Well, yeah, you have that. Oh my gosh, you have that,’ and he said, ‘No, I mean I really want to spend my life with you.’”

“It was the easiest … the words just came out, like, so naturally,” Long said.

“I thought it was the most romantic and honest and loving proposal,” Bosworth concluded.
