Julia Roberts: Academy Award Winning Actor... and Swimming Instructor to the Stars
Up until recently, Phoebe Robinson, of 2 Dope Queens and the very funny book You Can’t Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain couldn’t swim. That is until she took a cruise with Julia Roberts, on a yacht, in Croatia. (Side note: this should definitively prove once and for all that stars are just like us!)
Robinson recently recounted her swimming lessons with Ms. Mystic Pizza herself in a very charming interview on the Good One: A Podcast About Jokes podcast, the entirety of which can be found here.
Robinson, was in Croatia to shoot the Netflix romcom Ibiza, met Julia because Robert’s husband was the director of photography for the movie. Jumping at the opportunity to spend the day cruising with Roberts and her family on a yacht (who wouldn’t?), Robinson turned out to be the only person on board who couldn’t swim. Roberts, the consummate host, took it upon herself to gently teach Robinson how to swim so that she didn’t have to spend her day alone on the yacht sipping wine, while everyone else was in the water. It went entirely according to plan, because when you’re Julia Roberts, fate smiles down at you frequently.
By now you know Julia Roberts is basically successful in everything she does, so you won’t be surprised to find out that Phoebe Robinson is now a world-class swimmer. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but by her own admission Robinson can now doggy paddle and stay afloat, and that’s basically all you need to know how to do to get yourself out of a water-based pickle. All thanks to Julia Roberts.
If you have a few minutes, it’s definitely worth your time hearing Phoebe Robinson describe it in her own words, because she is very funny, and her books (the newest one came out yesterday!) are delightful.
In the very least, you now know if you’re stranded alone in the ocean with Julia Roberts, she’ll be able to swim for safety and send help, and that information is absolutely priceless, friends.
