People around the world are wondering what is going on with Kate Middleton. The Princess of Wales has not been seen in public since December. It’s been said that she was undergoing abdominal surgery in January, but no details were given as to what kind of surgery it was. Then, a photo was released of her and her kids on Mother’s Day, but several news organizations put a “kill notice” on it when it was proven to be doctored. Now the most British man in America is weighing in on the scandal.

John Oliver sat down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live this week. At one point, Cohen asked the question that all Americans are asking their British friends, “What the f*** is going on with Kate Middleton?” Clad in a very comfy tracksuit, Oliver thinks about the question momentarily, appearing contemplative. For a second, he looks like he may even pass the question by. He claims he was “out” on the scandal, leaving well enough alone, until the Mother’s Day photo.

After acknowledging that the Royals’s stance on this is “never complain, never explain,” Oliver jokes about what he thinks is happening. “There is a non-zero chance she died eighteen months ago,” the Emmy Award-winning host said in jest. “I’m not saying it happened,” he quickly pointed out, after comparing the situation to Weekend At Bernie’s, “I’m saying it’s non-zero.”

Oliver is joking, but it does feel like a kernel of truth is behind the laughter. We know the eighteen months part of that isn’t true. She was seen in December. But, as Oliver says later in the episode, “No theory is a bad theory until proven otherwise. She’s dead.” He also joked that the way to prove she’s not dead is to show her holding a copy of today’s newspaper.

Oliver isn’t saying what other people haven’t said. The rumors surrounding this scandal are endless, and the Palace’s attempt at covering it up has only made things worse. Still, for folks like me who don’t usually dip into this kind of gossip (though I get why others do), this was a way in that I didn’t know I needed. For the umpteenth time, Oliver has made me aware of and invested in something I was only passingly familiar with. It’s what he does best.
