Last Thursday night, your favorite aunt’s comedian let out years of frustration with Donald Trump on Twitter, which resulted in a lot of profanities directed at Trump supporters. This came as a surprise to many of Gaffigan’s fans, who preferred it when the comedian stayed out of politics. Gaffigan, nevertheless, refused to apologize. “I think Trump is ruining and possibly has already ruined my country,” he said in a recent Facebook post. “For me this isn’t a debate about the size of government, taxes, health care or even abortion.”

Gaffigan has also received a ton of “feedback,” in the form of emails, DMs, and other messages from Trump supporters, and in that Facebook post, Gaffigan decided to share what he’s learned from fans of the President in the last few days. For one, he said, it felt “liberating” to speak out, writing that we too often censor ourselves “so we don’t offend our politically correct friends but this also applies to our passionate Trump friends, relatives and peers.”

“There are bots,” he also added, which he didn’t realize until he started responding to those bots. He also said that Trump supporters earnestly believe that Hollywood is a pedophile ring.

“Through numerous messages I learned that while Trump wished Epstien’s partner/groomer “Well”, the Democrats are the ones who are supposedly pro-pedophile. It became abundantly clear that many, many people really do believe Hollywood and the entertainment industry is an enormous pedophile ring. I know that sounds absurd, but I received dozens of messages from people convinced this was true.”

Gaffigan also noted that Republican talking points work, evidenced by how many parroted them back to Gaffigan. “Trump supporters really do believe that Biden is a radical and/or a Trojan horse for America being turned into a Socialist state” as ridiculous as that might “sound to my Progressive friends.” Gaffigan also said that he understands that his career may take a hit, but he’s “okay with that.”

Gaffigan also noted that he has received a number of threats, including one he appended to the message, telling him that he’ll be “looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.” Finally, he noted that this is not about the issues. It’s not about Democrat or Republican, blue state or red state. It’s about Trump. “For many Trump voters this isn’t about any other issue except Trump himself. To me that is not only weird but kind of scary.”

Finally, the clean, Catholic father of five concluded:

I’m still digesting the whole experience (and still apologizing to my wife, Jeannie, for my profanity) but if you are still on the fence I encourage you to vote not for who I want you to vote for but for who your grandchildren would be proud you fucking voted for. (Sorry, Jeannie.)
