Since last year’s Pam-aissance, Pamela Anderson has returned to the public eye. She starred in a documentary, wrote a memoir, doubled down on her unfortunate #MeToo takes, and embraced the makeup-free (or, at least, very little makeup) look.
Pam ditched her trademark heavy ’90s makeup for a few reasons, the main one being the 2019 death of her longtime makeup artist, Alexis Vogel. Pam has said going sans fards (credit: Michael K of DListed) has been “freeing, fun, and a little rebellious too.” For Paris Fashion Week, Pam put her money where her barely lip-glossed mouth is, and served up some makeup-free FASHUN:
When a reporter asked her about her “beauty secret”, Pam replied:
“These days? Don’t do anything. Wake up. Whatever’s happening is just happening. It’s all about self acceptance. This is the chapter of my life I’m trying to embrace now….Sometimes it’s challenging, and you just have to understand that you’re good enough and you’re beautiful. I like to say the word life-ing instead of aging. Chasing youth is just futile. You’re never going to get there, so it’s like, why not just embrace what’s going on. Since I’ve walked out the door as me I feel a relief, just a weight off my shoulders, and I actually like it better. I’m dressing for me now, not for everybody else.”
Celebs flocked to the comments to applaud Pam for her makeup-free Fashion Week looks. Jamie Lee Curtis went even further and dedicated an entire Instagram post to Pam’s “act of courage and rebellion”. Her caption begins, “THE NATURAL BEAUTY REVOLUTION HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN!”:
Clearly, Pam’s choice resonated with Jamie. This isn’t a surprise; the current reigning Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner has talked about being “pro-aging,” her decision to let her belly free in Everything Everywhere All at Once, and how she believes fillers and Botox are “wiping out generations of beauty.”
Most of the comments on Jamie’s post agreed with her take. Selma Blair said Pam’s decision was “beautiful self assuredness.” Real Housewives star Kyle Richards wrote, “Beautiful.” But some commenters took issue with Jamie referring to Pam’s look as an “act of courage.” And they pointed out the fact that Pam has clearly dabbled in cosmetic surgery. Which, fair. Any time a celebrity calls another celebrity “brave,” it’s hard not to come down with a mean case of the eye-rolls.
And yet, no matter what you think of Jamie’s phrasing, it is a radical choice for a female celebrity to hit the red carpet without a metric tonne of makeup caked onto her face. It shouldn’t be, but it is. Vive la révolution, Pamela Anderson!
