Sometimes, in the vastness of the internet, it’s easy to forget how much Robert Pattinson was criticized early in his career, considering his current trajectory. This criticism was largely due to the backlash against the Twilight franchise, as naysayers either realized that he and Kristen Stewart (who faced greater scrutiny because of sexism) were not putting in their A-level effort, or simply grew tired of its pop culture dominance. Nonetheless, this did not hinder the fandom and success that the franchise created for the two stars.
Elsewhere, Robert Pattinson’s one-time roommate, Fifty Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan, felt a pang of jealousy regarding his friend’s success.
“I probably was quite jealous of him at one point, like early on when we were all friends back in London, and Rob was just going places, and we sort of weren’t,” Dornan said in an interview with Wired.
The use of “we” is amusing, considering Pattinson and Dornan’s other roommates included Eddie Redmayne, Andrew Garfield, and Charlie Cox, all of whom have since achieved various levels of success, ranging from award-winning performances to major blockbusters and Marvel headliners.
While the envy surrounding Pattinson’s rise to fame is understandable, it’s intriguing to ponder whether there’s any envy regarding his current array of films. Few actors have been as versatile as Pattinson, who has recently starred as the title character in The Batman and worked with renowned filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Claire Denis, and Robert Eggers. He’s also part of Bong Joon-ho’s latest release, Mickey 17, a lineup that many actors would envy.
Dornan has nothing but love for Pattinson and is doing well himself with the upcoming Heart of Stone starring Gal Gadot. He comes across as very charming in the interview. At the very least, this story serves as a fun reminder that this group of talented actors were once roommates and a callback to a time when Twilight was inescapable for all of us, stars included.
