Mike mentioned the Variety article on the mess that is Aquaman 2 in last night’s Pajiba Love, but I keep returning in my mind to the unsettling details in the piece. Much of the Variety article is based on a therapy session diary notes that were never supposed to be seen. Amber Heard did not release those notes to the public. A bunch of Johnny Depp stans paid the court to release them because they wanted to humiliate her, because that’s what Johnny Depp fans do.

The information in the diary, however, is what one in the legal profession would call reliable evidence, contemporaneous notes taken without a belief anyone might see them, let alone the entire world. No one is going to lie under those circumstances. Moreover, those notes only exist because Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for daring to speak out about abuse. Amber Heard did not bring the lawsuit.

However, not only did Heard lose the lawsuit (unfairly, in my opinion), but she twice had to pay the consequences of merely describing herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” The notes reveal that the director of Aquaman 2, James Wan, treated Heard “like a pariah” and that Jason Momoa wanted her fired.

Was it because Amber Heard was difficult on set? Or because her performance was poor? It was not! It was because Johnny Depp sued her, and they didn’t want to deal with the negative attention that Johnny Depp fans brought to the production. So let’s get this straight: Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard; Johnny Depp’s fans harassed Amber Heard; and James Wan and Jason Momoa wanted to remove her from Aquaman 2 because they didn’t want to be collateral damage in the harassment campaign against Heard.

Heard couldn’t even take selfies or promote the film because it might have invited negative attention because Amber Heard had the audacity to, again, describe herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”

That was Heard’s sin, but instead of shielding her, sticking up for her, or even showing her a modicum of compassion, James Wan and Jason Momoa not only wanted to get rid of her but they were hostile toward her. It’s like trying to suspend the victim of a bully because he got beat up too often, and it was a pain in the ass to treat his wounds.

It is really saying something that, in this situation, Elon Musk — who threatened in a letter to rain hell down on Warner Brothers if they fired Amber Heard — is the only guy who stood by Heard’s side when a vicious army of Depp stans came after her.

This is immensely disappointing.
