It’s important not to put celebrities up on a pedestal. They aren’t better than “normal” people. There isn’t a single perfect one. Still, we look up to them and are inspired by them, and when they do s****y things, it sucks whether or not they have built up goodwill or made fun of the cast of Dear Evan Hansen to their faces without them realizing it. No one gets a free pass.
Enter Drew Barrymore. Drew recently had a career renaissance, launching a successful daytime talk show in 2020. It’s a lot of fun! She, in my opinion, is perfect for the job. She feels open and warm and goofy as hell. She is far from a talking head. As far as second (or third?) acts for troubled child stars go, this was a pretty great one. It includes that DEH moment I mentioned earlier!
On top of a successful show, Drew kicked off the WGA strike by pulling out of hosting duties for the MTV Movie Awards! That’s solidarity! It was an incredible and public showing of support the WGA needed. It is also null and void now. Barrymore went from publicly supporting the strike to spitting in its face.
It was reported this weekend that The Drew Barrymore Show would be returning to production without its writers because they are currently striking in an attempt to earn a fair deal. The backlash began immediately and got so bad that Barrymore, much like her Fever Pitch co-star, had to release a public statement on the matter. Also, like her former co-star, people aren’t buying it.
Owning her MTV Movie Awards decision makes sense; doing the same when she’s out here scabbing? Not so much. With SAG on strike, people won’t be able to promote their work on her show. Coming back makes no sense. I could play devil’s advocate and argue that she’s trying to avoid her show getting canceled. Here’s a question, Drew: What if it gets canceled anyway? Then what do you have? An entire community that rightfully turned against you, and that’s it.
Now is the time for absolute solidarity. Yes, that means people will lose work. It’s happening all over. When the WGA and SAG are fighting for the future of the business, to ensure that people have jobs for years to come, a move like this is incredibly short-sighted. Drew Barrymore has been in Hollywood for a long time, and she should know better. Instead, she’s dragging her own name through the mud, and from the few bits that have popped up so far in response to this news, there may be more to come.
My husband did a couple segments on this show for free (and loved it/was happy to do it!) When they asked him to do a sponsored bit for Panera Bread that required he drive out of state, he asked politely about compensation, and… they ghosted him. https://t.co/T4dj7W8B90
