Harvey Weinstein Faces New Indictment for Alleged Sexual Assault, Wants Trial Taken Out of New York
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harvey Weinstein is facing a new indictment in New York for alleged sexual assault. The former producer and head of Miramax and The Weinstein Company will be arraigned Monday, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. The publication also alleges that the victim, in this case, is possibly actress Annabella Sciorra, best known for The Sopranos. Sciorra had previously alleged that Weinstein raped her some time in the 1990s, having forced his way into her apartment.
‘It is safe to say that New York City is the least likely place on earth where Mr. Weinstein could receive a fair trial, where jurors could hear evidence, deliberate, and render a verdict in an atmosphere free of intimidation from pressure to deliver a result that the politicians, the activists, the celebrities and the media demand.’
Other issues cited as reasons to move the trial from New York City are the #MeToo movement and ‘the rallying cry “believe all women”, [which is] a position that is antithetical to due process’, and the upcoming publication of two books on the subject, written by Ronan Farrow and Jodi Kantor and Meghan Twohey, who helped to expose Weinstein in the first place.
I’m certainly not qualified to talk about the legal side of this topic, but it still strikes me as sweetly ironic that Weinstein, who spent years manipulating and making deals with the New York Press for his own misdeeds is suddenly crying foul about their behavior and bias.
The trial is set to begin on September 9.
