Should the punishment fit the crime? If someone does something horrendous, should they be treated the same way? I find myself asking these questions a lot. I am not a supporter of capital punishment. Even if someone willingly murders someone, killing them would create more murderers. That isn’t always an easy stance to take because some people are rotten as hell. I just don’t think we as human beings should decide who dies. More often than not, the universe decides that for us.
Plenty of people deserve punishment but escape it (especially if they’re a white man). That’s not even just a “grand scale” issue. Many terrible, high-profile people we know have done something wrong but are free of consequences because of their wealth or influence. But, chances are you know one or seven people in your hometown who have avoided comeuppance. It’s a s***ty aspect of the world we live in and it gets worse!
Good people are punished constantly! Some of the best-intentioned, kindest people among us are subjected to trauma and hardships on a regular basis. They try their hardest to make this world a better place or just one that’s easier to exist in, and their reward is an unexpected medical bill or the loss of a loved one. I’ll just say it: life is not fair. So, when someone who has lived a truly vile existence begins to suffer even a bit, I allow myself a nod of approval.
Case in point, Harvey Weinstein is not doing well. The disgraced former movie producer is currently in jail and on trial for a history of sexual assault and harassment. His downfall sparked a movement that has unfortunately lost a bit of steam. Still, his downfall was monumental. While it could have been worse, things have certainly not gotten better. Weinstein is facing three new indictments as he returns to trial and that’s after a massive health scare from this past weekend.
Weinstein had to have emergency heart surgery on Sunday. According to his lawyer, Arthur Aidala, Weinstein “almost died.” Deadline has reportedly been told that Weinstein is in “very rough shape” and in “critical condition.” If you have seen any recent pictures of Weinstein, you’ll know that these quotes are likely truthful. He looks like he is rotting from the inside out. There was a time when it may have been assumed he was faking injuries and illnesses to gain sympathy, but you can only fake so much.
Instead, it seems that the universe is catching up to Harvey Weinstein. The man ruined people’s lives. He abused, harassed, and assaulted other people and then walked around like he was untouchable. If he spends his last days on this Earth in agony, that at least seems appropriate. I won’t be happy to watch someone suffer and die, whether they have been an appalling monster. However, it will balance the scales in a way I can at least approve of.
