We’re in an era right now where the gap between the ultra-wealthy and everyone else has never been so wide. There are suggestions that the wealth of Elon Musk, for instance, surpasses that of the entire bottom 50 percent of the global population. AI has concentrated even more of that wealth into the top one percent while the rest of the country is struggling week-to-week. We’re in a real eat-the-rich moment, and the wealthy have never been less popular.

Enter Charley Hull, an English professional golfer who has earned over $11.5 million just from winning tournaments over the course of her career. I have no idea who this person is because I do not watch golf because golf is, largely, a rich person’s sport.

Yesterday, Hull bragged — on camera — about a prank she pulled on her caddie. She gave him a fake scratch ticket that suggested he’d won $100,000. Her caddie was so ecstatic — “he was taking his hat off, taking his glasses off, running around the player’s lounge” — that he said he was going to take the day off. “His face was so happy, he was sweating, trembling, he couldn’t believe his luck.”

“And then we had to tell him that it was fake, and he nearly quit the job,” Hull recounted, laughing. She told this to a roomful of reporters, in stitches over a prank a wealthy woman pulled on her employee. “I felt bad,” she continued, laughing, “because I don’t know what he’s got in store for me to pay back.”

The internet reaction to this video is plenty of payback, although not nearly enough.
