Lara Croft is back, and this time, she’s a redhead.

Amazon’s long-awaited TV adaptation of Tomb Raider is currently in production and we’ve just received our first look at the new Lara, as played by Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. Archaeology is back in fashion and so are those shorts!

I dig this look. It’s classic. So very ’90s, and Turner looks great. If the point was to not mess with the formula then they’ve aced the assignment. It feels like a hint of what’s to come. The last Tomb Raider live-action adaptation we got was the gritty prequel origin story with Alicia Vikander which was pretty good but underperformed. The Angelina Jolie movies are daft as all hell but entertainingly so. Maybe this version will keep that silly streak but with more wit and derring-do.

The show is the brainchild of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the Fleabag writer and star who has largely laid low since the second season of that show made her popularity explode. She signed a major deal with Amazon that resulted in… well, nothing. But clearly the company was happy to keep giving her money since they renewed the deal for three more years in 2023. I’m a big fan of receiving more money for less work so I support PWB’s endeavours. Also, she just had a baby with Martin McDonagh and they’ll need to give the kid something to do while they win endless awards for emotionally raw screenplays full of black humour and hot Irishmen.

So far, the cast of this Tomb Raider includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, Celia Imrie, and Prince August Fredrik zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (no, really.) Principal photography kicked off this month so don’t expect to stream this one until well into 2027. Take your time, Phoebe. All I ask is that we get one episode where Lara locks her butler in the fridge. We all did that in the Croft Manor level, right?
