I was a chubby kid with glasses for most of my adolescent life. That, coupled with eczema, did not make me the most popular. There weren’t a lot of people like me (that I knew). That was until I flipped on the TV after school. At age ten, through some wonderful confluence of art and capitalism, TBS began running reruns of The Drew Carey Show when I got home from school. Suddenly, I wasn’t alone anymore.

Here was a guy who liked all the things I did. He was a baseball fan. The music he danced to was music I had never heard before and was thrilled to be introduced to. The man loved to make people laugh, and so did I (he had a studio audience, but still). Most importantly, he was chubby, had glasses, was an adult, and was … happy. Through Drew, I realized that things were going to be OK. Twenty-four years later, the man is still out there helping people.

(Sidenote, I’m aware he’s a staunch libertarian. Pobody’s nerfect.)

The WGA is still on strike because the AMPTP consists of supervillains who want to starve the writers. That’s not hyperbole! A recent article from Deadline said as much, and it was reported as a negotiating tactic and not, ya know, evil. The writers have been on strike since May. That same month Carey announced that he would cover the meals of any WGA member who stopped into Bob’s Big Boys or Swinger’s Diner in Burbank, CA. “Dine-in only, Tip included,” the long-time comedian wrote. As someone who still works for tips a couple of times a week, that second part was extra heartwarming.

Since then, Drew Carey has been dropping more than $10,000 a week feeding writers who don’t know when their next gig will happen. Carey has said he will foot the bills for the duration of the strike. He did this for the last strike as well. Carey is providing a service for people who are being attacked regularly for just wanting to be treated fairly. Ten-year-old me can relate, and thanks once again to Drew Carey I know things will be better someday.
