Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock passed away yesterday. He died of complications of cancer. Spurlock was 53 years old.

Spurlock is best known for his 2004 documentary Super Size Me, in which he ate only at McDonald’s for 30 days to see how the diet would affect his health. A number of the claims he made in the documentary have since come into question, but the film was certainly influential, spawning an entire industry of documentaries built on gimmicks. The film would also spawn the television series 30 Days, in which participants would engage in drastic lifestyle changes for 30 days, and the results would be filmed.

Spurlock directed several other documentaries, including Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden? and the fascinating The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, a 2011 documentary about product placement that — in my opinion — is a much better doc than Super Size Me.

In 2017, during the height of the #MeToo era, Spurlock essentially ended his own career by admitting to sexual misconduct, including infidelity, a sexual harassment claim, and committing sexual assault in college.

Spurlock leaves behind two sons with ex-wives Alexandra Jamieson and Sara Bernstein.
