There are a few podcast guests that Marc Maron has strongly connected with in recent weeks, and the result is some of his best work ever, even after over 1500 episodes. For instance, his conversation with Tig Notaro earlier this week was great, and the Paul Giamatti episode is an all-timer.

The David Krumholtz episode this week also falls into that category of great episodes. Maron and Krumholtz were vibing, and middle-aged Krumholtz is in his no-f**ks era, which was apparent on his Twitter account before he deactivated it earlier this year. In fact, he spoke to that on the episode, telling Maron that he quit because social media “is a place where celebrities take a wild amount of abuse, simply for being there.”

“What happened? You kind of went nuts on Twitter for a while, didn’t you?” Maron asked.

“I did, that’s why I stopped,” Krumholtz said.

“What drove that?”

“Craven attention?”

See? He’s exceptionally candid on the episode and shares a lot of stories about encounters he’s had over the years with co-stars like Alan Arkin (complete with a spot-on impression), Judd Hirsch, George Clooney, and, uh, Rihanna.

At one point in the podcast, Maron mentioned to Krumholtz how much he liked his death scene in This Is the End, the Seth Rogen apocalyptic comedy where a bunch of actors play versions of themselves (most memorably Michael Cera). Rihanna also had an extended cameo where a heavily intoxicated Michael Cera slapped her butt, and she, in turn, slapped his face.

Krumholtz recalls being around Rihanna on set. He was drunk. Not like Cera, who was acting. But actually drunk. “I was incredibly drunk in one of the scenes in that movie, and I regret it. I no longer drink,” Krumholtz told Maron. “They put me next to Rihanna, and I was wildly drunk. And she knew it, and I knew she knew it, and she was wonderful. And I was — I wasn’t mean to her, but I was just a drunk around her. This is my way of apologizing to Rihanna.”

The thing about being around Rihanna is that you probably need two drinks to combat the nervousness. Two drinks give way to three or four drinks, and then you’re too drunk to notice that you’re still drinking. That’s probably how you end up wasted in a party scene during the filming of a comedy.

Krumholtz also nearly veered into the territory that got him in trouble on social media, saying that he had an awful time on a big-budget comedy he made 15 or 20 years ago that he didn’t think was very funny. “I cannot say what it was ‘cause it’ll hurt people. I’m trying not to do any harm today. I could do a lot of harm at any moment.”

A glance at his IMDb during the years 2004 to 2009 doesn’t provide any clarity. The only comedy that fits that description that Krumholtz featured heavily in was Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and that doesn’t make sense, but who knows?
