Darius Rucker — the former frontman for Hootie and the Blowfish and subsequently the first Black solo artist to top the country charts — was arrested yesterday on misdemeanor drug charges, specifically simple possession/casual exchange of a controlled substance.” It’s unclear what the nature of the drugs was, but the arrest was made in Tennessee, which is one of the few states that still has not legalized cannabis.

In either case, the charges were minor, but the arrest caught the attention of Rucker’s ex-girlfriend, comedian Kate Quigley. The two have a messy history dating back to a drug overdose that Quigley experienced in 2021. Cocaine laced with fentanyl that Quigley took at a party nearly killed her and led to the overdose deaths of three of her friends.

Rucker and Quigley had already broken up when she overdosed, but it didn’t stop Rucker from providing a status update on Quigley’s condition at the time. “You know, she’s doing great. She’s coming out of that,” he said at the time. “My heart goes out to all the other victims, but [Quigley] is doing OK.”

Quigley later objected on social media to Rucker offering an assessment of her health. “Hi Darius, Could u plz refrain from making public comments about my health or well-being since u haven’t called once to see how i’m doing & have no clue? Thanks Boo Boo!!!” she wrote at the time. She was also surprised that he acted civil because their break-up was anything but.

“That Stung. Won’t lie,” she tweeted. “When i saw the TMZ report i thought, great. He’s probably writing a song about me called, ‘Let Her Die.’”

After his arrest last night, Quigley tweeted simply: “Yes. I’ve heard. All I can say is Karma.♥”

It’s fair to say that their relationship did not end on good terms because she also added:
