SNL alum Dana Carvey returned to his Fly on the Wall podcast with David Spade this week after a two-month hiatus following the death of his son, Dex Carvey. Dex passed away at the age of 32 from an accidental drug overdose in November.
In the episode, Dana spoke about the pain he has been experiencing — I’m on “the pain train along with millions of others” he said — and the support he and his family have received (David Letterman even reached out during his return to The Late Show). “If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss,” Carvey said.
He said that returning to the podcast gives him a much-needed break from the grief, and I can attest to that — while going through the experience with my son, the podcast with Dan and Tori provided the only two hours of normalcy I had each week.
“It’s a long day when you’re not working, and you get in your head,” Carvey said. “And I think it’s really cool to laugh.”
David Spade also mentioned that Carvey had received a letter from Chris Farley’s mother expressing her condolences while adding, “No one knows how to deal with it, but I agree that it’s nice to do the show again.”
Dana did emphasize the nature of their grieving process — it’s a private journey that he, his wife Paula Zwagerman, and their younger son Thomas are going through. “We’re all together, and we do a lot of fun things …. We hike, we go to church. You just want to make sure you keep moving.”
In other words, Dana Carvey is a wreck, as he should be, but he’s figuring out his way through it, and sometimes work — especially work you love — at least helps keep your mind off of the pain.
