Listen, white celebrity men: Just because Marvel has finally decided to make a superhero movie with a Black lead, or a Black female is being considered for the next Doctor Who, or because the box-office has turned violently against whitewashing doesn’t mean you can jump on the diversity train like it’s the Chicago Cubs bandwagon. You can’t reap the rewards of being a white male all your life and suddenly and consider yourself a “minority”just because you fit a narrowly defined demographic.

That seems to be the absurd tack that Billions actor Damian Lewis took in an interview with Radio Times about diversity in acting in Britain.

“As an actor educated at Eton, I’m still always in a minority.”

Wait, what?

Surely that quote is taken out of context. No one would say something so tone deaf in public, would they?

They would. Go ahead. Read the whole article. We’ll wait.

We tried to give this dumb ginger bunny the benefit of the doubt but …

“What is true and always rewarding about the acting profession is that everyone has a similar story about them being in a minority. From whatever background. And that coming into the acting profession is when we all finally find likeminded people.”

Even in context after reading the entire article, that quote is still egregiously fucked up. Dumb bunny. Bad, dumb bunny. Stop talking now, bunny.

For all his fancy fuckin’ schooling, that’s a shocking misunderstanding of the sociological meaning of “minority”. It’s not just math, stupid. Being in the minority doesn’t make you a minority. And someone from Eton — which costs around $50,000 a year to attend — ought to know better than that. Eton is like a greenhouse for the rich and powerful, which makes them a minority the same way a one-percenter is in the minority.

Also, that’s a nifty way to remind everyone he went to Eton, isn’t it? It’s a heaping dose of privilege wrapped in a not-even-that-humble-brag.
