Making a comic book can be a wonderful and collaborative process. More often than not, it takes a team to assemble a book. Sure, there are writers and artists, but there are also letters and inkers. There are colorists and editors. It takes a village! When it doesn’t, it’s because some incredibly talented soul has taken it upon themselves to spend countless hours toiling away and practicing to hone multiple skills. Even then, a writer/artist will often need two or three of the aforementioned artists.
Every role I mentioned takes patience, dedication, and hard work to strengthen. Because of that, those who take their time to hone their craft usually expect to be paid to do it. As they should! Also, it may take time for them to create. Every creator moves at their own speed, and drawing comic books can be particularly challenging. Artists are often juggling multiple projects at a time and trying to ensure that what they release is a quality product.
It seems that Colin Kaepernick took issue (pun intended) with… the creative process behind comic book making. “Lumi addresses an unnecessary dependency on gatekeepers that slows creators down,” said Kaepernick in a press release on the Lumi website. “This allows creators to get back to what they ultimately want to do: create. The platform empowers creators to work freely and independently, deciding when and how they want to collaborate with others. This independence is crucial for fostering a vibrant and diverse creative ecosystem.”
What is Lumi? It is a generative AI platform that will focus on comic book storytelling. Colin Kaepernick is the founder and CEO of Lumi. That’s right! The man who once put his career on the line to give a voice to those who didn’t have one is now looking to make a profit by propping up those who don’t want to do the work. He’s created a giant shortcut that will cause significant harm to the industry and creators within it.
Tech Bros are champing at the bit to get in on Lumi. Kaepernick has already raised $4 million for the company despite only announcing it a week ago. Comic book creators are not as pleased with the former quarterback, to say the least. It appears that Kaepernick announced the company a week ago, then traveled to San Diego Comic-Con to see various creators and take pictures. At the very least, comic book artist Cully Hamner was not aware of Kaepernick’s new venture when he saw him at the convention. He summed things up pretty well on Twitter.
So basically, what you're telling me is that Colin Kaepernick spent days at SDCC smiling and taking pictures in Artists Alley with all the people he's intending to screw. https://t.co/PiytQ8DyAA
