In an interview with Women’s Health, where you can find her on the cover topless just weeks after giving birth (#Goals), Cobie Smulders revealed that when she was just 25, during season three of How I Met Your Mother, she had ovarian cancer.
“I had tumors on both ovaries,” she says, “and the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes and surrounding tissues.” It took multiple surgeries over the course of two years to remove the cancerous tissue.
“I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I’m cancer-free,” she says. “Now that I’m five years out, I’m trying to think of it as a positive thing and what can I learn from it. And if I can create more awareness, I’ll do it.”
Damn, 25 is so young (the highest rates for diagnosis are between mid-50s and mid-60s). And the next year (during season four) she became pregnant with and had her daughter. It’s great Cobie has had a positive outcome and that she’s speaking out and raising awareness. The stats are scary—according to the American Cancer Society, about 21,290 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed this year and 14,180 women will die.
All together now: fuck cancer.
