Chappell Roan Would Rather Enjoy Her Life than Win a Grammy

Chappell Roan has been making headlines for months now, both for her sudden rise to fame and her candid rejection of what that fame brings (in her case, stalking and harassment). Last week, she won Best New Artist at the VMAs, and so people are naturally talking about the possibility of a Grammy win next year. But she, unsurprisingly, isn’t too keen on the idea.

“I’m kind of hoping I don’t win because then everyone will get off my ass: ‘See guys, we did it and we didn’t win, bye!’ I won’t have to do this again!” Roan said in an interview with The Face, though she acknowledged, “My mom would love to go to the Grammys or the Brits.”

So, she’d be happy to be nominated and get a trip for her mom out of it—and hopefully, give us another badass red carpet moment—but, as she’s said before, she doesn’t want the added attention and pressure.

“I feel ambitious about making this sustainable,” she told the outlet. “That’s my biggest goal right now. My brain is like, Quit right now, take next year off.”

It’s a welcome change from artists like Taylor Swift who go on world tours for what feels like 86 years and release multiple albums throughout. She’s well aware of that trend and rejects it.

“This industry and artistry f—ing thrive on mental illness, burnout, overworking yourself, overextending yourself, not sleeping. You get bigger the more unhealthy you are. Isn’t that so f—ed up?” she added. “The ambition is: How do I not hate myself, my job, my life, and do this? Because right now, it’s not working. I’m just scrambling to try to feel healthy.”

It’s hard to work for something most of your life and then get there only to feel unhealthy. I have quit many a job and dropped out of college twice for that very reason. You can’t do anything well if you don’t feel well. I think I speak for Chappell fans everywhere when I say, take a break, babe!
