I’ve had my fair share of summer camp romances and I can tell you, none of them were boyfriend material. I mean, at summer camp, I was definitely not girlfriend material either. Summer camp is for flings and flings only. That’s what Carey Mulligan thought too, but fate had a different idea.
“We were friends when we were kids. We went to camp together,” Mulligan said of her husband Marcus Mumford on Monday’s episode of the Smartless podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. She said they were 10 and 12 when they met.
“You guys hook up then?” Hayes asked.
“We didn’t,” she said, because they were 10 and 12, so, gross. “I wrote in my diary that he was the nicest, the kindest person I’d ever met and I gave him a 9 1/2 out of 10,” she said, but confessed that she also wrote in her diary “That he definitely wasn’t boyfriend material. Not that I’d ever had a boyfriend at that time. But I decided that he was not it.”
But, of course, they found their way back to each other, and he proved her wrong: “We were pen pals for a couple of years, then we lost touch, then the internet happened,” she said. They found each other on Facebook, but then both separately deleted their accounts. Then they reconnected again when she was 24. She said it was clearly “destiny” and joked they should “probably get married,” which they did, in 2012.
So, I still have time. Maybe I should write to the guy who hid candy and love notes in my cabin every day that one summer.
