There’s no way to sugar coat this, some men have decided to kill off Nancy Drew so that the Hardy Boys can solve her murder. Yup. Seriously. They’re fridging Nancy for the goddamned Hardy Boys.
Here’s what the writer, Anthony Del Col, who is obviously a dude, has to say about the decision, per Newsarama:
A diehard Drew fan himself, Del Col brings along a deep dive into existing lore while pushing against the boundaries of tradition. The Death of Nancy Drew follows Del Col’s previous noir reinvention of the property in Ringo Award-nominated Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Big Lie, though this new series can be read entirely on its own.
“Over the years, there have been a lot of difficult mysteries to solve in the lives of Nancy Drew as well as the Hardy brothers,” said writer Anthony Del Col. “But I wanted to top them all, and so put together the ultimate case — solving Nancy’s death! Joe Eisma and I have had a blast really coming up with some twists and turns that all fans — new and old — of Nancy, Frank and Joe will enjoy.”
I f*cking can’t. Of course, someone who professes to “love” the character of Nancy Drew would show said love by killing her off. Makes total sense. I want to punch something right now. Just…can dudes not f*cking kill off an icon and role model for many women just so the f*cking Hardy Boys can solve her murder? Like, can we not? Can men just let us have Nancy Drew in peace? Can you stop killing women in your “art” in general, please? In fact, add rape in there, too. Can you stop abusing and harming women for your own f*cked up narratives all in the name of “art” and entertainment in general? Can’t we get one goddamned moment of peace to enjoy the things we like without some man sliming his weird issues all over it? Please?
F*ck this new Nancy Drew comic, and f*ck anyone who thinks it’s cool, interesting, or awesome to kill off my friend Nancy in order to challenge the f*cking Hardy Boys. Just like, f*ck you, OK?
Could this all turn out to be a “freak out” and Nancy is magically alive in the comics? Sure, of course—but it doesn’t change the narrative around this story that Nancy is dead and now the Hardy Boys have to solve it, regardless of what happens. I just…I can’t. This is why we can’t have nice things. Because some dude will come along and try to make it “better” by killing what we love so that men can feel and do something. I’m going to go watch Working Girl and try to forget that someone actually put money behind this gross, horrible concept. Gross.
