Billie Eilish didn’t mean to “come out,” as it were, in her November Variety interview, but when speaking of women, she said:
“I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real…I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.”
While she identifies as a woman, she said she’s never “felt like a woman.”
“I’ve never felt desirable. I’ve never felt feminine. I have to convince myself that I’m, like, a pretty girl. I identify as ‘she/her’ and things like that, but I’ve never really felt like a girl.”
Now, she’s surprised people are surprised. “I kinda thought, wasn’t it obvious?” She said on the red carpet at the Variety Hitmakers Brunch. “I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”
I’m surprised too. I read the article in its entirety when it came out, and wrote about Eilish’s feelings about people’s feelings about her body. I read the words that are now being called her “coming out” and didn’t think anything of them. I hate that I’m now writing about this as if it’s news.
Eilish agrees with me. “I just don’t really believe in it,” she said of coming out. “I’m just like, why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.” And so when she saw the article she realized, “Oh! I guess I came out today!”
“It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, so it’s cool that they know, but ooh,” she gushed, “I’m nervous talking about it.” Nevertheless, she confirmed, “I am for the girls.”
In the original interview, Eilish said, “I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well,” and admitted that she assumed women didn’t like her. When asked about the positive reaction to the article from women—which proved they do, in fact, like her as much as she likes them—she said, “I’m still scared of ‘em but I think they’re pretty.”
Same, girl. Same.
