Hey, want to feel old? I mean, really, really old? The ’90s are approaching their 30’s!
Dylan and Brenda would have had their 25th High School Anniversary this year, and frankly Donna Martin should still be grateful that she graduated after getting drunk at prom. For every One Week-style ’90s hit you remember, there’s like five Kula Shaker songs you’ve forgotten by now…until tonight. (Ok, spoilers, no Kula Shaker songs are listed but I expect you know how to source some if needed.)
In honor of everyone getting older, let’s take a walk down memory lane, and remember the best forgotten songs of the ’90s, courtesy of the Overlords. Please note, It’s clear our ’90s taste are pretty limited to a few genres, so feel free to add your own and make us feel chagrined we forgot some obvious choices.
Pop
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars
Garbage - Special
Olive - You’re Not Alone
Amy Grant - Baby Baby
Republica - Ready to Go
Hepburn - I Quit
Tom Cochrane - Life Is A Highway
Full disclosure, I play this song at least once a week, but I may be alone in doing that…
Michael W. Smith - Place In This World
R&B
Adina Howard - Freak Like Me
Soul For Real - Candy Rain
Monica - Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)
Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up
Per Overlord Tori: I dont’ think this is forgotten, but it should be remembered harder
PM Dawn - Set Adrift On Memory Bliss
Alternative
Is there any genre more 90’s than alternative? Does it even exist anymore?
Eels - Novocaine For The Soul
Jars of Clay - Flood
Spacehog - In the Meantime
King Missile - Detachable Penis
Superdrag - Sucked Out
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
The Flaming Lips - She Don’t Use Jelly
Mr. T Experience - Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba
Side note: This is my favorite band of all time, and they briefly had a moment in the sun in 1996. Their video was played exactly once on MTV, and they were the opening act for Green Day’s ill-fated European tour which they abruptly canceled halfway through. Who knows what could have been, but you may recognize this one.
Lush - Ladykillers
Rancid - Ruby Soho
Space - Female of the Species
Ugly Kid Joe - Everything About You
Cibo Matto - Sci-fi Wasabi
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Nerf Herder - Van Halen
Kenickie - In Your Car
Swing/Ska
Remember that very brief period from about 1997-1998 where we all listened to Swing and Ska music?!
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - You Me and the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight
Reel Big Fish - Take on Me
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
Cherry Poppin’ Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot
Weird Mashups that Could Have Only Happened in the 90s
Anthrax & Public Enemy - Bring The Noise (Official Video)
