Everything about this picture is amazing, but mostly it’s amazing to me because Glamour magazine is making breastfeeding fashionable. The description of the photo is like any other fashion magazine photo — it describes what she’s wearing (Roberto Cavalli feathered dress and towering Prada shoes with a magenta Prada scarf, Yossi Harari earrings, and an eye-catching Lanvin ring) — only instead of contorting into an uncomfortable position and holding her mouth in a half-open position while giving the camera f*ck-me eyes, Olivia Wilde is simply breastfeeding her child.
Are both her and her baby heavily airbrushed? Yes, but that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? It’s turning this very natural, very beautiful act into high fashion. When the only pictures of women breastfeeding their children found in magazines are in the centerfolds of Hippie Granola Mom Weekly (we have a 3-year subscription!), it’s nice to see that breastfeeding is something that even celebrities do, too. That’s the kind of practice that magazines should be encouraging.
