Are Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Really Getting Married at Madison Square Garden?

For the past couple of weeks, rumours have swirled that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will get married on the 4th of July weekend and that the big day will take place at Madison Square Garden. The New York Times reported that a permit was filed in early June to close roads around Madison Square Garden from 2 to 4 July, and that several of Kelce’s fellow Kansas City Chiefs players had booked hotel rooms in the area. Apparently, some Amtrak police officers have also been told to expect a wedding on this already busy weekend.

This is weird, right?

When I first saw this story break on TMZ, I thought it was a red herring, something leaked from Swift’s team to throw people off the scent and distract from the real location. But as the days go by, we’re getting more reports that something big is happening at MSG and that T&T are probably involved. Why would someone this famous and this rich want to get married in, let’s be honest, a not especially glamorous location, and do so on the 4th of July weekend when the World Cup is taking place in the city? We know Swift loves and has a house in New York City but Kelce’s not attached to this location and it’s the opposite of intimate.

Plus, why MSG? It’s a windowless venue for concerts and sports. It’s a big part of her career because she’s performed there several times, but for a wedding, or even a big party, it seems like a weird choice. What it does have in its favour is good security, and underground access that would keep the paparazzi away. But if privacy is your focus, you wouldn’t choose New York City on one of the busiest weekends of the year. The need to close down entire roads is expensive and inconvenient. And you’ll still have the place surrounded by fans.

I know that Swift and Kelce love being a big showy power couple, and they’ve done incredibly well in making their romance a public show that has strengthened both of their images, but an MSG wedding still doesn’t feel like a good fit for them in my mind. Do they want this day to be like a royal wedding, complete with millions of onlookers? Maybe they do, but that seems stressful and hard to plan for. Swift is one of the most famous people alive but she’s still capable of keeping things private. It wouldn’t be entirely impossible for her to run off to an island somewhere, get married, then reveal the news in a song (with 74 vinyl variants, naturally.) Is a wedding another opportunity for her brand?

If I had to put money down on what is happening next week, I would say that Swift and Kelce are having a small ceremony somewhere else then having a big party at MSG, then she’ll release a big love song about her new marriage that’ll go number one in 78 countries. Swift is never not working.
