Andy Richter Appears to Confirm That Former 'Conan' Bandleader Max Weinberg Was a Nightmare

This isn’t particularly new — the reel in question surfaced earlier this summer — but it just clawed its way back onto Reddit, and horror stories about celebrities never get old. The celebrity in question here is Max Weinberg, who led the band on The Tonight Show during Conan O’Brien’s stint (Weinberg did not follow Conan to TBS, probably in part because Weinberg is reportedly an a-hole).

Rumors about Weinberg being difficult are also not new. He’s earned an Ellen DeGeneres-type reputation, except that he was never known for being nice on camera either. Rumors even swirled that after NBC fired Conan from The Tonight Show, Weinberg angled to talk Jay Leno into keeping him on as The Tonight Show bandleader.

The point is: Patrick Walsh (It’s Always Sunny, Crashing), a television writer and producer and former page on The Tonight Show, appeared on the Good Christian Fun podcast hosted by Kevin T. Porter and Caroline Ely. They’d gathered to dig into Kevin Smith’s movie Dogma, the subject of drummers came up, and Walsh couldn’t resist unloading on what an a-hole Weinberg was. He recounted how Weinberg commanded a bigger dressing room than Conan; how he’d erupt three times a week if a particular tray of gourmet cookies weren’t set out each night; how he summoned unpaid interns to his house on Saturdays and Sundays to garden for 12 hours and then stiffed them (his wife had to ferry them water because Weinberg refused); and — per Will Forte, who told Walsh — how every time Forte hit the NBC gym, Weinberg would be “in there with his leg up on the vanity, completely naked, blowing drying his pubes with the community blow dryer.” Walsh added that Weinberg and Conan basically had no relationship.
