The US Open: a legendary tennis tournament in its 143rd year, or a chance for celebrities to show off their wide range of facial reactions from the stands? Trick question. It’s both. This year, the event attracted stars like Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Laverne Cox, Martha Stewart, Lil Wayne, Mindy Kaling, and many, many more.
Today, celebrity spectators Nicole Kidman and Amy Schumer are making headlines. Over the weekend, both women were photographed at the Open wearing collared pink outfits. Then, this morning, Amy, 42, took to Instagram to share a pic of Nicole, 56, intently watching tennis with her chin resting on her hand. Amy captioned the post, “This how human sit.” The implication is that Nicole is not human. So, what is she? Alien? Robot? Shaggy dog temporarily transported into Nicole’s body after she carelessly read out the inscription on a cursed ring? You be the judge:
Immediately, people raced to the comments to accuse Amy of cyberbullying, via Page Six:
…Instagram users slammed her “mean” caption and accused her of “mean girl public trolling.”“Are you cyberbullying Oscar and Emmy winner Nicole Kidman right now?,” one follower asked.
Another added, “Bringing others down is always a sign of our own internal insecurities anyway, so the critics here should hold a mirror.”
Now, this isn’t the first time Amy has faced backlash for joking about another female celeb’s looks on social media. See: the Hilaria Baldwin “body shaming” posts, which kinda-sorta contributed to Hilaria being exposed as a non-Spaniard.
In that case, Amy deleted her Hilaria posts after a few weeks. But, this time, she didn’t let the controversy simmer; she immediately scrubbed the Nicole Kidman pic from her Instagram. And, not long after that, she posted an apology that made fun of Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis writing letters in support of convicted rapist Danny Masterson. Here’s what Amy wrote:
I want to apologize to all the people I hurt posting a photo of Nicole Kidman and alluding to her being an alien. I will be asking the cast of that 70s show to write letter advocating for my forgiveness. #takingtimetoheal
Alright, sure. But, before you could say, “Well, the Ashton and Mila thing puts this Kidman ‘controversy’ into perspective”, Amy deleted her second post as well. This left Schumer-haters no choice but to air their grievances on Amy’s most recent Instagram pic, which celebrates Coco Gauff’s U.S. Open win:
Coco Gauff responded to Amy’s post with four heart emojis. Today, one Instagrammer replied to her comment with, “@cocogauff Your girl Amy likes to bully people about their appearance. Comment?” Um, Coco’s had a big week, scandalized Internet person. Maybe we leave her out of this one?
