Amanda Seyfried Is Not Apologizing

You know what’s nice? And this goes both ways, whether someone says something I agree with or not: when they don’t back down after it sparks backlash. When they don’t issue some inauthentic, PR-written apology. The first reaction is usually the most honest one. And Amanda Seyfried’s first reaction to the death of Charlie Kirk was to call him “hateful,” based on the words Charlie Kirk used during his lifetime.

It generated some backlash because, at the time, anything anyone said about Charlie Kirk — positive or negative — drew backlash from at least one side. But Seyfried, as she tells Who What Wear magazine — while she’s out promoting The Housemaid and A Testament to Ann Lee — has no intention of apologizing. She’s doubling down.

“I’m not ****ing apologizing for that. I mean, for ****’s sake, I commented on one thing. I said something that was based on actual reality and actual footage and actual quotes. What I said was pretty damn factual, and I’m free to have an opinion, of course. Thank God for Instagram. I was able to give some clarity, and it was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualized, which is what people do, of course.”

Indeed, they do, as I’m sure someone will do based on a sarcastic comment she made about the President in this very interview. “It’s always hard to see people who are tricky and harmful have success - like our gorgeous president, the best possible example of that,” she said.

Or her defense of her The Housemaid co-star Sydney Sweeney, which I’m sure will raise someone’s hackles.

“She’s got it so much harder than I ever did - not even close. She’s got a spotlight on her that I never had, never wanted. I can’t help but feel somewhat protective of her, though she doesn’t need my protection. She’s gonna continue to make choices in her career that I think will define, or at least solidify, her as an actual actress because people are too distracted by all the other s*** that is created around her.”

She says what she means, and she doesn’t care about the noise. Kudos for the honesty. Also, check out the interview in full, if only for the photoshoot.
