All the 'Dwayne Johnson Regrets Endorsing Biden' Headlines Are Misleading

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson gave an interview to Fox News this week, and first of all, that’s probably all you need to know about anything that comes out of his mouth—he was talking to Fox News. With that said, all the headlines that scream, “The Rock Regrets Endorsing Biden in 2020,” are both accurate and woefully misleading.

They are accurate because Dwayne Johnson says that he regrets making any endorsement in 2020, and they are misleading because they suggest that Johnson, by virtue of that regret, would have endorsed Trump. No. By the same logic that he regrets endorsing Biden, he would have also regretted endorsing Trump in 2020. The logic? He doesn’t want to create any division.

“I realize now going into this election, I will not [endorse a candidate], my goal is to bring this country together. I will keep my politics to myself. It is between me and the ballot box. Like a lot of us out there, not trusting of all politicians, I do trust the American people and whoever they vote for. That is my president and who I will support 100%.”

He also criticized woke culture, which he probably can’t define. “In today’s easy cancel culture world — and cancel culture, woke culture, this culture, that culture, division, etc. — that really bugs me.”

In other words, Johnson is saying, “When I was promoting movies like Moana and my TV sitcom, representation was important to me! But now that my movie career has stalled and I’ve returned to the wrestling ring, it’s important to my bank account that I do not alienate my base, many of whom are also Donald Trump supporters.”

Again, this is apparent by the fact that Johnson is sitting down with Fox News to do this interview. The level of pandering is offputting, though not as offputting as his ego.

“Fame is a superpower when used correctly, I believe, to influence people,” he said. There’s gonna be no endorsement. Not that I’m afraid of it, but I realize that with this level of influence, I keep my politics to myself.”

How very noble. It’s also very humble of The Rock to think that he alone can heal a divided country by withholding an endorsement.
