The Softer Side of Sears Will Now Devour Your Brains

How did you know that Facebook had officially become uncool? When your mother got an account (and you created all that weird family tension when you refused to friend her). How do we now know that zombies, too, have nuked the fridge?

They’re the centerpiece of a new ad campaign for Sears.

Oh, OK. It’s still kind of cool. And they’ve gone all out over on the Sears website. I’m almost ashamed that I found so much enjoyment in this video, where a zombie tries to navigate an elevator.

you know advertising is successful when people go out of their way to expose themselves to it.

though i wonder if it makes sears more attractive to a younger demographic, or just offers them some quick free entertainment.

there are studies that show that other than a few notable pinnacles of branding dominance, like nike or apple, money spent on advertising doesn't particularly increase market share or revenue.

I don't really believe that these are real. They look like something a bunch of friends made one night after the store was closed. Frankly, they're not even that amusing. The link you provided also didn't work.

The makeup is just terrible. Is this what we've come to, people?

I would have to disagree with you Rowles, zombies only appeal to people that are into the zombie subculture. So the fact that Sears is using zombies as some sort of marketing tool will only make sense to people that are fascinated with zombies. Kinda like showing a commercial in which a gigantic bottle of Valtrex is chasing someone.

Was that elevator music, like, a midi version of a song from the original Dawn of the Dead?

link worked for me, they are real

I love all things zombie, so I found those videos pretty amusing bad makeup and all. At least Sears has a sense of humor.

I'll give Sears a partial pass because it's right around Halloween, but I agree that the zombie market is in grave (bam!) danger of getting completely overrun (hey-O!). Sorry kids, puns give me waaay too much joy.

Oh, speaking of things zombie-related, I'm an animation student and we recently finished this amusing zombie infomercial that may go along with this nicely:

I swear I'm not a zombie spambot, just a ordinary long-time lurker whose love for this site groweth exponentially with each passing day...

Yeah, when I saw the trailer for Walking Dead, I thought: Jesus, can't we get some new monsters?

You.
You...Keith.
...You do not belong here.

I would think this is mostly for Halloween, not just zombiephilia

I'm pretty impressed. I mean, have you been to Sears lately? Clearly some nephew said - 'Hey, can we?' and someone upstairs said, 'Why the F not, because, really.'

The reason Sears feels comfortable using Zombies is because their primary market – suburbanites – are big fans of zombies. It's not a risky marketing ploy because there's no risk!

The reason suburbanites are fans of zombies is because it gives them the idea that it's a disaster that they could actually survive through or even plan for. It gives meaning to their cubicle-filled lives.

Well, at least, amongst my friends that's the sad fact of it ...
