The Lost "Doctor Who" Cold Open

Quick: How do you know you’re a true “Doctor Who” fan? When you find yourself correcting someone else’s spelling of Doctor (“It’s not abbreviated, damnit!”) Before I was initiated (and I now own “Doctor Who” t-shirts), I once felt that reproach by Jay, as I recall. It felt good the other day to pass it along, although the bewildered person being corrected probably thought I should get a fucking life. He’s probably right.

Anyway, in case you folks missed it, here the “lost” “Doctor Who” cold open from Craig Ferguson’s show, and if you’ve never seen “Doctor Who” before, this should tell you everything you ever need to know, so you can feel free to pick up where ever you’d like, as long as it’s the first Eccleston episode.

Do I really have to watch it? Really?

Hah! Awesomeness, as only Ferguson brings it.

And that line is pretty much the best way to describe the appeal of Doctor Who. Intellect and romance indeed.

Posted by: Vermillion at December 3, 2010 9:40 AM

It has go-go dancers and hand puppets; therefore, it is teh awesome. QED.

Posted by: jeem at December 3, 2010 9:48 AM

Well done!

Posted by: Jay at December 3, 2010 10:14 AM

Um...yeah...you guys can keep it. I don't want it.

Also that one ugly man. Please keep him.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2010 10:15 AM

I don't mean Ferguson, obviously. Or the guy in the silver suit.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2010 10:15 AM

Ah, thanks for fixing that!

Posted by: Jay at December 3, 2010 10:19 AM

Intellect and romance triumphs over brute force and cynicism.

I just needed to see it written out.

Posted by: Meander at December 3, 2010 10:23 AM

Oh Dustin. Thank goodness you've been turned, or I probably would never have seen this.

I love Craig Ferguson. I simply must get a TV one of these days...

Posted by: dsbs at December 3, 2010 10:31 AM

Or....not

Posted by: Jay at December 3, 2010 11:07 AM

That was really stupid and I LOVED IT!

I'm glad to see that Dustin has finally been turned. My love of the Doctor for the past 48 years is now accepted by all!

Posted by: BWeaves at December 3, 2010 11:19 AM

figgy, hush. Any man who can wear boots, highwater pants, and a (cool) bowtie and still look like an (admittedly slightly gawky) action hero is very attractive. So there.

Posted by: esme at December 3, 2010 11:23 AM

I gotta go with esme on this one. I mean, sure, he's no Tennant. But who is, really? And thank you, Dustin. It's 9:00 in the morning here, and I already know this is the best thing I'll see all day.

Side note: Now I really want a T-shirt that reads, "Intellect and Romance Over Brute Force and Cynicism!"

Posted by: ShinyKate at December 3, 2010 12:03 PM

Bowties are cool. Not as cool as fezes but still.

Posted by: Irina at December 3, 2010 12:08 PM

That was very good, especially the intellect/brute force line.

Question: what was Matt Smith wearing?

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 3, 2010 12:18 PM

He likes the v-neck look.

Posted by: Jay at December 3, 2010 12:24 PM

I haven't bothered to set up a DVR yet because I watch such little live tv (blame Netflix, et al), but I think it's my unmitigated love of Craig Ferguson which may finally drive me to do it.

Screw Conan & Dave, and Jay should suffer dying broke and forgotten - Ferguson's the late night man.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at December 3, 2010 1:12 PM

This has been creeping up on me for a while. And yesterday's awesome video may have contributed to my epiphany. What I'm realizing is that I love Matt Smith's Doctor so much that it sort of hurts my chest. It's powerful, folks.

Posted by: AM at December 3, 2010 1:17 PM

FANTASTIC!

Posted by: sailboat at December 3, 2010 1:50 PM

The only one I love more that Craig is that damn rabbit.

Posted by: mswas at December 3, 2010 3:06 PM

Holy crap that was bloody brilliant.

Posted by: noonoo at December 3, 2010 3:38 PM

I love Craig Ferguson. That is all.

Posted by: MM at December 3, 2010 3:45 PM

Uh oh.
i want to nibble on the girl in the white hat.

Posted by: Scott at December 3, 2010 4:05 PM

what was Matt Smith wearing?

He's into that v-neck look.

I don't much care for it.

Posted by: Jay at December 3, 2010 5:26 PM

Yeah, he's still fugly. And David Tennant looks like a frog.

Posted by: figgy at December 3, 2010 9:40 PM

Craig Ferguson is the best immigrant we've ever had!

(...uh, no offense, figgy.)

Posted by: Jerce at December 3, 2010 11:06 PM

Do not start with the first Eccleston episode. Start with "The Empty Child". Trust me.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 4, 2010 12:10 AM

And David Tennant does not look like a frog. He kinda looks like an ostrich. An ostrich I'd like to have sex with.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at December 4, 2010 12:11 AM

Oooh, ostrich. Definitely true. As for the other part...well, have fun. He seems like a cool dude.

Posted by: figgy at December 4, 2010 10:09 AM

I haven't seen any of this new Doctor yet (I'm still trying to find time to finish up Children of Earth and then all the specials first), but he's so endearingly dorky.

Also, the only way that would've been more awesome is if the Dalek said, "EX TERMINATE! EX TERMINATE!"

Posted by: Anna von Beav at December 4, 2010 11:57 AM

I've never gotten into the more modern episodes - I got sucked into watching the Tom Baker and Peter Davison era during college to enjoy the bad paper mache special "effects." And of course K-9.

love craig!
