At the 1:30 mark:

“Shouldn’t the job of comptroller go to someone who has shown a modicum of self-comptrol.”

… and we’re off.

At 2:40:

“Why do you want this job, because before you had your fall from Grace, or whatever her name was … “

At 3:30:

“Do you think that, uh, it seems that voters are more forgiving than they used to be. Do you think that that signals progress for our country or the slow decay of our moral values. “

“Wow. That’s a tough one.”

“This ain’t Charlie Rose, motherf*cker.”

Colbert is so good, and credit Spitzer for taking it in stride.

I didn't give Spitzer that much credit for taking it in stride. I was imagining how much damage he did to the green room once he got off the set.

But truly, he had to know what was coming, and he was willing to eat shit for the media exposure.

  • Maguita NYC

If only Stephen Colbert could be a surprise guest interviewer on "Fox and Friends". Drama TV would never be the same!

  • PaddyDog

I don't give a shit who cheated on his wife as long as I am not that wife. BUT, I have a huge problem with Spitzer because prostitution is a form of physical and mental abuse of women. I don't care that we was with a "high class" prostitute. The reality is that prostitution is an activity that puts women (and men: usually young boys) in danger on a daily basis. The majority of prostitutes are not doing it willingly: they are driven by drug addiction, duress from pimps, financial need, etc. And when Spitzer decided to pay a prostitute for sex, he became a part of that abuse.

  • Wigamer

This whole "apology tour" seems to be just another new step in the quest for political power. It's like a) do something immoral, hypocritical, disgusting, etc., b) lay low for 2-3 years c) make public appearances with attendant lame, disingenuous "apologies", d) run for office & get pissy when your opponent, journalists, or voters bring up the issue during your campaign. It's cynical and nauseating.

  • E Robb

Except that Spitzer was doing amazing work that we all should have appreciated pre-scandal, and now he wants to go back to doing that. He's not Paula Deen just looking to be back in the public eye. He's fighting to return to sitting in an office cutting down on greed and corruption.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Do you live in NYS? He did good work as AG. As governor, he talked a lot about all the good work he was going to do, but he was pretty much stymied.

Kinda like Weiner in Congress, actually.

  • PaddyDog

I agree and the worst thing is the public laps it up and votes for them again and again.

  • Wigamer

Also, I can barely contain my lust when Stephen calls people "motherfucker."

  • NateMan

    Here's my problem with Spitzer.

I don't care he boned a call-girl(or multiple ones). If that's where he chooses to get his jollies, fine. I don't even much care about the hypocrisy of it. We're all hypocrites at one point or another, though the irony of being on an anti-prostitution kick while getting his knob slobbed by a prostitute is amusing. No, what I care about is his expectation that everyone else will forgive and forget, and let him move on, while Ashley Dupre gets to have her name plastered all over the news again whether she wants it or not. Yes, she chose to be a call girl, and maybe some people find that immoral and so are fine with the updated Scarlet Letter scenario she finds herself in. I'm not. The double standard is particularly absurd in this case, and in all the cases of adulterous politicians who expect to be able to just move past their indiscretions. We welcome one party back while indulging in prurient condemnation of the other.

Well, there's certainly a whore involved in this. And it ain't the girl who exchanged sex for money.

  • Sara_Tonin00

She isn't really in the news, having her name dragged around. Unless you count joining the NY Post as a sex advice columnist. Most of the stories that I see mentioning her are stories about the fact that she'll be dragged into the limelight all over again - aka, self-fulfilling prophecies.

But she also seems fine with her notoriety - posing for Playboy, etc.

My beef with Spitzer IS his hypocrisy - in engaging in illegal activity (whatever your opinions of it are), and in expecting the public to forgive him.

I don't think Spitzer is whoring. I think he desperately wants to get back in the game, that he chafes that he's not regarded as a hero anymore, and that he wants to rebuild his legacy, his esteem. I can understand those things. But I'm not interested.

  • I'm right there with you. Dupree doesn't seem to really care about the notoriety she gained. And really thinking back, did she really get as much flack, or had as much constant attention, as Spitzer? And I think the fact that she was an escort kind of worked in her favor, because it was a sort of "well, duh" kind of thinking with her. It's much easier to go after a hypocritical crusader than it is a woman who doesn't really hide what she does.

The ironic thing is, the weird way we treat sex in this country, people can indeed parley such scandal into viable success, and it doesn't take much to pull it off. Hell, we now have a near market based on pseudo-celebrity "leaked" sex tapes. So the "Scarlet Letter" is indeed morphing into the "Easy A", a badge of pride and attention rather than shame. But it does require a degree of honesty and matter-of-factness in regards to the target of the scandal.

Oh, boy ADD kicking in, losing focus....Point is, Spitzer is a douche fro trying to act like it's nothing. He certainly doesn't have the charisma of a Clinton or the rabid fanbase of a Sandford, so why he is trying to be so glib is amazing in it's carelessness.

  • Sara_Tonin00

She is an attractive young woman who was an escort, not a broke hooker, so yeah, she's getting positive attention, and I haven't seen anyone finger-wagging at her.

Hell, even the madame who hooked Spitzer up with her is now running.

I look at the NYC elections right now, and it almost makes me want to weep for how much it reminds me of Italian politics a decade ago. Weep or punch something. (probably punch something and then weep about my busted hand)

  • e jerry powell

If only direct democracy weren't so unwieldy.

It still wouldn't get rid of these particular problems, though.

  • Don't forget the California election clusterf*ck that gave us the Governator.

  • Sara_Tonin00

Oh, that's right. Too depressingly true.

  • I absolutely agree with you. As much progress as we make as a society, we still get hung up in this double-standard slut-shaming bullshit and it drives me crazy. We went through all this not too long ago with that Petraeus scandal. The reaction to hearing that a highly-placed officer cheated? Let's discuss how slutty that chick is! It's insane to me how much, in a rush to set up some low-class whore/rich powerful man scenario, we seem to be almost instantly forgiving of the man and place all the blame on the woman and her sexy dirty wiles. It's happened so many times with slightly different variations and it makes me sick.

I just want to stick my head in the sand sometimes. I comfort myself with the thought that when gay affairs become a thing (that's right, WHEN), maybe the news media won't know which way to turn and who to call a slut. Fingers crossed!

  • Drake

Don't keep them crossed too hard. There will always be race and class to decide who the slut is.

  • Don't forget occupation! Talking heads love it when they can winkingly use words like "model" or "cocktail waitress."

  • Sara_Tonin00

Yeah, but so do people on this blog.

  • koko temur

Jesus. You are one sexy motherfucker when you are all indignant.

  • NateMan

It's how I get all the ladies. And not a few of the men, too.

  • e jerry powell

    Room on your dance card?

    ;-)

But seriously, indignation is a turn-on. Except when it's Spitzer.

  • NateMan

    For you, I'll make it!

  • Sara_Tonin00

I was so pissed to see Spitzer on the show last night, touting his book and candidacy. I was even more pissed when the audience clapped at some of his heroic market-wrangling spiel.

Look, I hear Spitzer talk, he's intelligent, he's driven, and I remember why I voted for him. But fuck you very much, no, not again.

Of course, since I'm third party, I don't even have the option of voting against him (or Weiner) in the primary, which also pisses me off. Basically, all of NYC politics and this fucking heat iis pissing me off this morning.

But Colbert? Balls of steel. If only he'd allowed there to be an awkward pause while Spitzer tried to b.s. his way out of that last question.

  • e jerry powell

I mean, how egomaniacal must Spitzer and Wiener be in this moment? They have to be seriously rankled at the amount of, well, shit they're going to have to take through this whole election cycle for things that they brought upon themselves.

The schadenfreude arouses me a little, I must admit.

  • E Robb

Are we really ignoring that Spitzer was perhaps the only one working to prevent the economic collapse that was so obviously coming, due to him having sex with a prostitute?

And now we're calling him egomaniacal because he's humbling himself and taking a position both below his stature and paycheck to go back to doing hard unromantic work keeping finances in check?

  • e jerry powell

Speaking for myself, I'm calling Spitzer egomaniacal because he is. Have we forgotten "Parker Spitzer" already?
