James Franco addressed the scam that went around the Internet yesterday when it was revealed that he had hit on a 17 year old woman on Instagram. Franco, in an appearance on Live With Kelly and Michael admitted as much, saying that in this age, this is how we meet people, and he used “bad judgement”

“In my position,” he said, “not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, but sometimes it gets published for the world.”

I suppose the fact that she was 17 and he is 35 is not really a concern?

I had a friend at Columbia around the time Franco was there and the impression I got was that it was an open secret on campus that he never took it seriously, had assistants pick up his material and spent all day pulling college girls with his fame. Of course, it's entirely anecdotal and I didn't really believe it, but I sure do now!

The age difference might be slightly creepy, but I don't see what the huge fuss is about. She's of legal age, and going from her messages, she clearly knew what she was doing and what she wanted.

  • Ruby Guggenheim

I think a large part of the fuss is that there's no indication that if she hadn't "known what she was doing" (and many17-year-olds wouldn't, there's a huge, HUGE power differential there) it doesn't seem like it would have impacted him in the least. 17-year-olds' brains aren't fully developed yet, their judgment is quite literally impaired. A 35-year-old man targeting one is therefore pretty despicable, especially one with as much famous-person-power as James Franco. The same would be true if their genders were reversed.

At the end, when Kelly Ripa tells him how it's ok, that, "it happens to everyone" made my head explode. Yes, we all use social media to hit on 17 (going on 18) year old kids, get busted on social media, and then want everyone to feel sorry for us. Because we were just going through those middle-aged, awkward dating rituals of trying to sleep with high school seniors.

  • Classic

Yeah the way everyone is apologizing to Franco for this is just gross. He was hitting on a 17 year old girl. This whole well they are artists and everyone kind of looks the other way on this stuff is awful.

  • RilesSD

He has a movie coming out where he plays a teacher in a relationship with an underage girl (something along those lines), so I thought this was more Franco performance art. That seemed like a sincere comment from him though.

  • Berry

I have a hard time believing James Franco does anything sincerely. I think he probably bleeds irony and artistic meta commentary on 21st century alienation.

  • L.O.V.E.

I am leaning more and more to it being all a bunch of bullshit.

  • F'mal DeHyde

Yeah, even before I read that I thought this sounded like a scam. The guy's notorious for this kind of "performance art."

  • LL

I can't be crazy, what she did is so much worse. She's not a pedophile trapper, she recorded their entire private conversation and immediately posted it online to prove she got hit on by James Franco. She did it for fun. To humiliate him. For fun.

James Franco is the first to get called out, but celebrities have been doing this since fame began. It's weirder to see them in a relationship with someone half their age than them sleeping with one. Age of consent is there for a reason.

  • L.O.V.E.

Which is what immature high school kids are want to do. When you start playing the online chat game with someone claiming to be 17, but "18 real soon", you are lucky Chris Hansen didn't walk through the door.

If she were older I would fault her, but the blame rests on him. If I was a high school kid and a 10 years older Salma Hayek even looked my direction, everyone in school is going to know about it. If she actually tried to pick me up, I would have pirated a radio station Slater style to broadcast it.

  • lowercase_ryan

"tried to pick me up" implies you'd have rejected her advances. Nobody likes a liar. Or a fool.

  • Yocean

Because if they touch on the age difference, they must start the conversation on Hollywood's long standing cover up of the rampant, exploitive and down right inhuman pedophilc history, which is as old as the industry itself. See Dan Schineider et al.

  • cruzzercruz

This isn't a rare occurrence, but you'd think someone as high profile as James Franco would be a little smarter than to Instagram message an underaged girl, with photographic evidence, and expect her to keep her mouth shut. Dude must've really wanted it.

The girl played it right, and didn't become a victim. Not all teenagers are totally stupid.

  • John G.

if Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc have taught us anything, it's that stars are not that smart.

  • nobcarajo100

17 years old kids and young shouldn't be allowed to have sex with anyone, Be it younger or older.

  • John G.

    good luck enforcing that anywhere

  • Sthompson89

She was going to be 18 when they met...

  • John G.

    still creepy, just not illegal

  • Green_Eggs_and_Hamster

Not defending or anything, but in New York the age of consent is 17, so it was legal either way.

  • Zirza

It's 13 in Spain and 14 in most of Eastern Europe, so if she'd been in Barcelona she'd be practically mature.

  • Strand

I think the Spaniards call that 'ripe.'

  • John G.

no wonder Woody Allen loved it there

  • shadowblade

Nice slut shaming. Way to act like a 17 year old who is of legal age doesn't have agency over her sexual choices.

  • L.O.V.E.

slut shaming implies anyone of us is targeting the GIRL.

    [35/2] + 7 = 24-year-old is the cut-off.
Its James Franco we are watching out for. He needs his own public service announcement:

  • space_oddity

How exactly is it slut shaming to find a 35 year old hitting on a 17 year old fan creepy?

  • Three_nineteen

My understanding is that most people think older guy/ younger girl is creepy because the younger girl is more naive and innocent, and maybe is being pressured into doing something she might not want to do because the older guy is manipulating her in some way.

Sounds like this girl knows exactly what she is doing.

  • Mrs. Julien

    Sleaze shaming, really.

  • Classic

Seriously what pains me about this is the way that Franco framed this is that it's not his fault and social media can be tricky. He was fine with talking to some unknown 17 year old girl on Instagram and would have hooked up with her apparently if she had not leaked it online. He's gross. I dont understand a lot of these actors out here these days.
