Damn You, President Obama. Why Must You Be So Incredibly Adorable?

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Videos | Comments (48)

What? “Adorable” not a presidential enough word to describe Barack Obama? Sorry. He sang again. At the White House. And it was insufferably delightful. And look at the crowd. Have there ever been that many African-Americans and uncool white people in the White House at once?

I just Obama’s reluctance, the kind of reluctance that says, “Your damn right I’m going to sing, but I’m going to pretend like I had no choice in the matter.”

How will the GOP combat this? Will Mitt attempt to sing again? Because if the election becomes "Candidates Got Talent"? They got nothin'.

This year's election should be decided by who gets the most pairs of panties thrown at him on stage.

Posted by: e-dogg at February 22, 2012 10:23 AM

You realize that it's the sight of that many African Americans in the White House...and not as staff...that upsets people like Pat Buchanan.

It's a beautiful thing.

Oh wait. Actually, do encourage them.

"I just Obama’s reluctance"

I think you accidentally a word there

Posted by: Ari at February 22, 2012 11:07 AM

I think Obama is intentionally ratcheting up his “blackness” in an effort to bait the GOP candidates into giving in to their white resentment and saying something awful and racist at tonight's debate or at ensuing events.

He’s totally daring them to pander to the 0.5 percent of US voters that make up the Republican Primary electorate and lament the downgrading of white privilege and the loss of “dignity” (whiteness) in the White House.

Remember, we won the cold war by being cooler than the Russians. Blue jeans and MTV were as important as the arms race. You may have to grade on a curve, but when is the last time the "less cool" candidate won a general election? Even GW Bush in 2004 had the tattered remains of his Jack Bauer mystique to use against the severely uncool John Kerry, and in 2000, before we knew he was awful, you could easily argue that he was cooler than Gore. Clinton was cooler than everybody and never lost a general. Dukakis made HW Bush look cool somehow, and Reagan was fake-cowboy cooler than Mondale and super-earnest Carter. Carter was Jesus-Freak-Peanut-Farmer cool in 76 'cause Ford sucked. You have to go back to Nixon beating McGovern to even have a plausible example of the less cool candidate prevailing.

Point is, if the rule of coolness is to be believed, Obama has no chance of losing.

Martin, your entire post made me stand up & cheer. Or it would if I weren't too exhausted by the GOP Rodeo to stand up. I believe you are absolutely right about the Rule of Cool, & you make an eloquent case. It's a mystery to me how people don't see this--it's so glaringly obvious.

Bravo, Martin, whoever you are---you are brilliant.

I swear Obama's launching a Charm Offensive, whispering in our ear, "Remember, baby, remember when you couldn't get enough of me? When I was strong and our love kept us warm? Look, you know I love you. I hope you still love me. You want me like I want you, don't you, baby? I'm sorry, baby, I know I've hurt you, but I'm only human. I did the best I could. I never stopped loving you. Come dance with me, baby and let's move on together. Oh yes, baby, we can. Come with me now."

I choose to vote for my politician based on their accomplishments in office, not how they sing into a microphone. I won't be voting for Celene Dion and I certainly won't be voting for Obama. You guys are sheep.

So you're saying Obama is pulling the wool over my eyes? Garnering my vote with shear charisma instead of political substance? That I herd him sing and forgot I'm not a Republican?

Well, I think that's a baad assessment. Ewe really offended me.

You know who are sheep? Most Cubans from Miami including my wonderful Cuban parents who have been here since 1970. It is ridiculous.

ALL Democrats are socialists or communists and as much as they hate the other candidates and actually like Obama, they will never vote for him.

I ask them really?
After all this time you still think that they are ALLL communists just waiting to take over?
So does that mean that all Cubans are drug dealers and play the bongos?

Get over it my Cuban people!

Posted by: daria at February 22, 2012 12:58 PM

Lame - so you're calling Obama a shepherd? Rather an ironic compliment considering the religious implications of the term.

Posted by: Bert at February 22, 2012 1:03 PM

@daria
Do I know you? I too am from Miami with Cuban parents, and holy crap do they irrationally hate Obama. Like, y'all -- there is a vast range of beliefs between moderate American Dems and Castro's party.

Posted by: Donut Plains at February 22, 2012 1:20 PM

Martin,

Yours is a very interesting theory that I had never heard nor considered before. I have to agree with you. I guess the main point is that the winner of the presidentially is usually (almost always) the cooler of the two (or three) candidates. That doesn't necessarily mean the winner is "cool," but simply cooler than his opponents. For all the hatred and animosity toward W, I think most people would admit that they would rather hang out with him than Kerry and Gore. The guy is hilarious, although maybe not intentionally.

As much as the righties hate Obama, even they know, deep down, that he's one cool mutha. . ..

Posted by: Hoof Hearted at February 22, 2012 1:23 PM

Sorry, **presidentially** ????? Don't know where that came from. Should read "Presidency."

Posted by: Hoof Hearted at February 22, 2012 1:25 PM

His "coolness" won't lower my mortgage debt or create any jobs. He needs to take a lesson from Bill Clinton on how to be president AND be cool. I get the feeling I'd be a little more impressed with his antics if there was anything in the last few years that made me feel like I didn't waste my vote on rhetoric.

And, Mrs. Julien since when is disagreeing with you, missing the point? You call someone a troll for being abusive and ignorant, not for looking at things in a different way. I mean us plebes don't mind you being so naturally superior to us we just want you to be so in a little more clever way. A couple of other commenters were a little corny but not so "paltrowesque" as calling someone a troll.

Now before you go disecting my comment and pointing out how uneducated and unsophistocated I must be, keep in mind that I never claim to be anything more.

Posted by: Phat girl at February 22, 2012 1:53 PM

Phat girl ,

"Paltrowesque"? Ouch. Well done.

I didn't actually say he/she had missed the point. I said he/she could commence missing the point. I was trying to settle in for the inevitable flame war. I may have oversold my opinion. Verbal overkill is a problem I have. I say things too formally and too emphatically and it creates a certain impression. Do I act superior? I do? Well, can you blame me? Just look at all this: I am an overweight, middle-aged secretary AND I live in New Jersey! The shining glory of my lifetime of failure is impossible to deny! How can I help but share it with all of you?

Please don't confuse my inability to shut up with anything more than being an @sshole with an email address. That's all Pajiba requires of me and it's a standard I am able to meet. And I am usually way too busy noticing the world revolving around my tiny head to throw stones.

And now I feel like my narcissism has once again lead me to go on too long, so I'm gonna sit my ass down and shut the hell up.

Posted by: BierceAmbrose at February 22, 2012 3:28 PM

Mrs. Julien,

I have loved Pajiba for many years and find the tolerance level here most appealing, until it's not. I only meant that the cleverness of your usual posts' was missing in this one and it seemed like a bit of a chep shot, beneath your normal standards.

I just figure if you gots the balls and the brains to be a regular commenter around here than you are too smart to pander to the "am not/are too" crowd. Anyone can call names, pajibans come at you with reason, fuck you up with the facts, and rip the words out of your own mouth so they can beat you with them.

Posted by: Phat girl at February 22, 2012 3:29 PM

@phatgirl

Insofar as the "Rule of Cool" is concerned, I'm not making a value judgement, just observing a trend. I obviously think that the country would have been better off with Gore or Kerry from 2000 or 2004, but, alas, they were less cool than their opponent, somehow.

Can I surmise from your criticism of Obama that your disappointment is coming from his left? Either way, you can certainly disagree with the guy all you want, but the one point that I hear all too often and which is patently, provably untrue is that he hasn't DONE things.

This is the most accomplished progressive presidency in 50 years. I'm sick of typing it out on the internet, but the laundry list of things he's done include:

-Passing substantive health care reform that Democrats have pined for for generations.

-Actually ending combat operations in Iraq (to be fair, following timetable recommended by GW Bush) and setting drawdown date for Afghanistan. The troops are actually, really coming home.

-Killing Osama Bin Laden and killing or capturing 18 of the top 20 Al Qaeda leadership, crippling their organization worldwide.

-Saving the US auto manufacturing industry from bankruptcy and all but assured disappearance and recouping taxpayer investment at a profit.

-Passed sweeping reregulation of the financial sector.

-Cut middle class taxes and payroll taxes while lobbying for higher taxes on the historically undertaxed superrich.

-Outlawed predatory and unfair lending practices by credit card companies.

-Stopped torturing people.

-Ended Don't Ask Don't Tell and directed the DOJ to stop defending DOMA in court. He speaks softly about it, but this is the most aggressively pro-Gay Rights president in history.

-Pulling economy out of violent contraction in which we saw negative growth of -8.9% and were losing 750,000 jobs per month (in Bush's last month)to sustained economic growth for over 10 quarters and two straight years worth of sustained net job growth.

To say that, over his term, Obama's White House has LOST jobs is to blame him for the first few months of his administration when the country was losing close to a million jobs a month, before any of his policies had been enacted, which is like blaming a pilot that takes the wheel of a plane in a tailspin for the altitude of the plane once he levels it out.

I'm sick of people saying Obama is "all rhetoric". It's lazyminded and untrue. You can disagree and/or hate what he's done all you want, but don't say he hasn't done anything.

@Donut Plains

We very well may know eachother, Miami is frighteningly small!
Unfortunately that is something that so many of the younger Cuban generation have to swallow for way too long and some of them still vote the way their parents vote. They don't even look at the facts or dare to question.
I don't argue it anymore with my folks.

Posted by: daria at February 22, 2012 4:18 PM

Martin - not to mention he's managed to severely improve the opinion of the US in the eyes of its allies. And that he manages to do it with humility (which is probably the reason you have to keep reiterating his actual accomplishments in the first place).

Wait till his second term. US presidents who take over from a predecessor of a different political stripe are always stuck fixing the previous POTUS's mistakes for their first term anyway.

Posted by: Bert at February 22, 2012 4:43 PM

do you come here for political discourse or entertainment reviews and shenanigans? My suggestion to dustin is to post political shit to political shit websites and keep with the snarky entertainment.

goes for both sides BTW. i don't care if you're in love with obama, ron paul, gingrich or the damned cookie monster. what's that old saying? the best way to ruin a dinner party is with politics or religion? (or did i just make that up?)

Wow. Martin, you have an admirer. I'm new here, & it's a pleasure to see such sharp, smart comments from people who appear to be using their own brains rather than parroting things they hear every day, & can't be bothered hurting their fragile sensibilities with facts.

I second Obama/Martin 2012! Will there be a bumper sticker?

Oh, & Mrs. Julien? Please don't shut the hell up. You are a scream & I loved your posts.

Martin, let's not forget that universal health care for the United States was first proposed by Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican.

And it was also suggested by Richard Nixon, another Republican. If I recall correctly, Nixon tried to get Teddy Kennedy on board with the idea. How's that for bipartisanship?

I've been Republican since I was old enough to vote, but I have been, and am currently, appalled by the candidates my party have put forward since the 1988 general election. The current quartet and the ideological bent of the party faithful itself are, if not terrifying, at the very least deeply troubling.

Opposing Obama doesn't make anyone a hater. The irony of the left is that anyone who disagrees with them isn't just wrong, but is evil, racist, stupid, etc. Yes, the party of progressives have become the party of the closed-minded.

And Martin, well-played, sir. You make it seem as if Obama has been anything but a major disappointment to both right and left.

He has taken a page from the Clinton playbook and highjacked the agenda of the GOP in almost every major policy decision since taking office: Iraq, Guantanamo, Homeland Security, Afghanistan, gay marriage, the auto bailout, Wall Street reform, middle class tax relief, and this week, corporate tax relief.

Where he has opposed the GOP - healthcare reform (rammed through with little to virtually no public debate), the Keystone oil pipeline, union bailouts, allowing gas prices to climb thru the roof, taking crony capitalism to whole new levels (see Solyndra, Beacon Power, SunPower, Nevada GeoThermal, all major donors and all bankrupt or on the verge after massive federal government loans) - he is widely opposed by a majority of Americans.

Still, there are major differences. Obama supports increasing federal government presence in everyday life decisions, continued massive deficit spending (his total deficit spending in his four years will more than double Bush's deficits over eight) with no slow down in sight, and the hypocrisy of the most secretive administration in Washington since the Nixon years (this after promising to be the most "transparent").

Posted by: James S at February 22, 2012 7:58 PM

Yes, it's Obama who supports increasing federal government presence in everyday life decisions, not those pesky Republicans who are all about freedom from government, as long as they can make birth control prohibitively expensive so most women can't make that choice and as long as they can make sure no woman is allowed to decide what they want to do about the pregnancy that results from such restrictive policies. Other than trying to take away the basic rights of half the population, yeah, they've totally got Obama there.

Posted by: twop_fan at February 22, 2012 9:41 PM

I'm confused (again).

Everything the Republicans do is bad and evil (because they are) and they suggested universal health care, so it's ... a good thing?

I mean I get this, but I hate everybody, so, more evil - yay! And what's with the Nixon love? Oh, wait, I get it. We're all evil now.

Carry on.

martin is right. obama has accomplished a lot. only
problem is that most of it leads to a financial calamity
that will take place sometime after he has left office and
is raking in the big bucks penning his memoirs.

4 years ago he was a rock star. now , however, even his affability,
" cool " manner and singing can't mask the fact that he's just
another chicago politician. martin should check out his " fantasy "
budget . some president. some leader.

Posted by: snake at February 23, 2012 1:31 AM

@snake - I'm pretty sure most "Chicago politicians" (seriously? What does that even mean? why do the GOP nutbags want to alienate the entire third largest city in the country? idjits) are better at using punctuation than you at least.

Posted by: JenA at February 23, 2012 6:21 AM

Is this an article from the Onion?

Obama has done nothing to indicate he's anything other than a corporate shill.
He's no different from his predecessor; in fact he serves the same purpose in that he evokes an intense emotional response, overly positive in some, overly negative in others.

He's just a skilled teleprompter reader, a pitchman, a brand.

Give your heads a shake, a man worthy of his current office would have at least tried to rein in Wall St. $ Washington Corruption.
Instead he enables it. Look At his actions, not his words.
Look at the company he keeps.

Many of the posters here have no business mocking the TeaPartiers or others when they themselves are easy marks for an obviously manufactured brand.

Remember Dubya wearing an aviator jacket on an aircraft carrier, or on his ranch wearing a cowboy hat? How about the now disappeared Sarah Palin?
Think of how these characters were used to play supporters of Red Team.

Now think of this: what kind of characters could be used to manipulate Blue Team?

Oh, but Blue Team people are too smart to fall for that, Blue Team is too sophisticated because "we're educated & techologically savvy & things are different inthe Information Age"

Believe what you want if it makes you feel better (that IS what it's about these days, remember), but it doesn't change the fact you're fools.
We all are fools to some extent, some of us know

The reason Liberals (not necessarily all Leftists) are so utterly hated is because of their Dogamtism & sense of cultural/intellectual superiority.

Statist Liberals are vile mostly because they say one thing & do another.

NDAA, anyone?
