I couldn't resist: An orchestra flash mob in the Wallrafplatz, in the center of Cologne in Germany. I'm a lame fan of flashmobs, but orchestral flash mobs -- that play the Star Wars Theme? -- that just pushes me over the edge. Your NPR friends are going to love this.

I used to live right around the corner! Why did I move away? Why was I not in the city that day?

  • PDamian

Loved this, but it was somewhat bittersweet for me. My home state (not the one I live in at present) is eliminating school arts and music programs as fast as they can, on the grounds that the budget is too tight for "incidentals." At this rate, this country's orchestral flashmobs will soon consist of kazoos, a bunch of guys playing Guitar Hero and some asshole who makes fart sounds with his armpit.

    Pure awesomeness.

  • My coal black heart grew one size this day. Thanks, DR!

I was desperately hoping it would be "The Imperial March," but one takes what one can get.

  • tamatha_uhmelmahaye

    That was delightful!

I couldn't help smiling uncontrollably while watching that. Pants is right on, Orchestral flashmobs are quickly becoming the only flashmobs worth a damn.

    German flashmob?

Watch out for the Storm Troopers and Imperial Army!

  • Fabius_Maximus

    Wrong theme. :)

  • BWeaves

    That made me smile.

What I meant to say is: that was quite nice. I never knew our stuffy public television had it in them to make a pop-culture reference that everybody knows, not only people in the age bracket 60+.

  • Phaedre

Yay for the Germans on Pajiba!

  • Rooks

    That'd be "jäih", then...
But anyway, yay for us. We exist and that's a classy flashmob. Now let's go back to being vaguely non-US-American, alright? Makes it easier in any discussion. About anything. Anywhere. With anyone. (I blame Hitler. And Scooter.)

  • Rooks

It was quite nice! Ten to twenty more of these on a regular basis and the cancellation of Wetten, dass..., and I'll gladly start paying GEZ again.

Orchestral flashmobs are my favorite kind of flashmobs. And brass section! And strings! And timpani! And HARP, goddamn!

  • ScienceGeek

I don't know why, but that harp was what blew me away. She just walked that thing out like it was a shopping trolley! I... I didn't know they could do that. I mean, I know they have wheels, but she's surrounded by people with violins and flutes, and she's pushing a bloody great HARP.
Also, that woman rocking out with her violin is somebody I want to go drinking with. I suspect she would be very fun.
