Where Have All The Good Times Gone

What a load of shit that was. I had to look up the writers of this episode (Kate Barnow & Elisabeth R. Finch) to see why it went so wrong. The two have only written three episodes of True Blood across the seasons and a handful of other television scripts, and it shows. The entire first half of “9 Crimes” was flat out boring, and the second half was disconnected and nonsensical and still boring. Thank goodness for that short fantasy scene that could be altered in mind playback for my own purposes.

I don’t know if it’s the actors, the writing or both, but the Sookie/Alcide scenes are a sore disappointment in comparison with Club Dead. Back at his apartment, Sookie tends to Alcide’s wounds after his barroom beat down. The two blather on about nothing, with zero chemistry, causing complete indifference to their conversation. Alcide is upset over weres using V, Sookie is curious about Alcide’s ex-fiance and we impatiently wait for the next scene. Sookie’s cell phone rings; it’s Bill calling to let her know he’s leaving Bon Temps and her. Bill tells Sookie that he porked Lorena as only two vampires can pork and stoically proclaims he cannot be with Sookie anymore. Sookie sobs and says she doesn’t believe him, but Bill doesn’t give a shit and asserts that Sookie should not look for him - he doesn’t want to be found. But you know and I know and I’m sure Bill knows, Sookie won’t give up. She cries and whines about Bill to Alcide. Even though Alcide is shirtless and hot, the scene is so bad I don’t want to pay attention.

Sam runs into the night screaming after the Tommy-bird. He discovers a van, knocks on the side and Mama Melinda answers the sliding door. She tells Sam they’ve gotten behind on the rent and when Sam lets her know Tommy was trying to steal from him, Melinda says that’s just what he does when things go badly. Sam tells Melinda the family can’t live in the parking lot and she promises they’ll leave as soon as Tommy returns.

Franklin has Tara under his spell and he interrogates her about Sookie and Bill. He compels Tara to phone Sookie to find out where exactly she is. Franklin feeds words to Tara, who creepily repeats them over the phone to Sookie, but they fail to get Sookie’s location. Franklin viciously bites Tara - who the hell cares?

Lorena is giddy over having had her warped, twisted way with Bill, but he’s still pretty pissed. When she suggests Bill will eventually fall in love with her, he punches Lorena so hard in the face she flies right out the silver doors and he burns his hands slamming them shut.

Sookie can’t sleep, she discovers Eric hanging around outside her window and invites him in. Sookie smells the ocean on Eric. She tells him he played by the North Sea as a child and when he asks how she knows this, Sookie says she can smell his memories. Sensually kissing Eric, Sookie slips off her robe and pushes him back onto the bed asking if he wants more, but she’s only a daydream. (Clearly the Skarsgård can have chemistry with anyone, because this scene is steamy.) Eric is startled back to reality by Yvetta’s “Am I boring you?” inquiry.

Alcide makes breakfast for Sookie and asks when she’ll be ready to leave. Sookie predictably refuses to go until she finds out for sure that Bill isn’t being held against his will. Sookie wants Alcide to take her to Debbie and Cooter’s engagement party at Lou Pine’s but Alcide gets angry and takes off, saying Sookie should work out her own shit. Later on, Alcide’s sister Janice (Dawn Olivieri) drops by and gives Sookie an unconvincing tough chick makeover (black hair and clothes) so Sookie can to go back to Lou Pine’s. While she’s there, Sookie hears Janice’s thoughts that Debbie is being inducted into Cooter’s gang; Sookie passes on the information to Alcide when he returns and he agrees to go back to the bar to investigate.

Franklin thoughtfully leaves Tara bound and tied to the toilet so she can’t answer Lafayette’s call (but nature’s - she can!).

Bud Dearborne’s fast-track retirement party is held at Merlotte’s and Bud announces that Andy is Bon Temps’ new sheriff. An ego-bruised Jason, realizing that life is quickly passing, gets in some young punk’s face and gives both the punk and himself a lecture on how easy it is to go from the top of the pile to the bottom. Afterward, Jason follows Andy to the men’s room and attempts to blackmail Andy into making Jason an insta-cop.

Russell and Bill share a drink and a cigar and discuss the Queen. Bill tells Russell he wants Lorena disappeared when Bill has fulfilled his duties. When Russell seemingly agrees, Bill throws Eric under the bus as the Queen’s V seller.

Franklin comes back to Tara when the sun goes down, acting like a bi-polar lover/terrorizer. He kidnaps Tara and brings her to Russell’s Pleasure Palace where Talbot sneeringly greets and then tries to turn away Franklin, saying that Russell is out. But Franklin won’t be dissuaded from waiting, he takes a seat as Tara stands quivering.

Sam hires Jessica as a hostess, but Arlene still complains that she needs more help - not more redheads. Jessica runs into a guy who thinks she is still alive and praises Jesus; Jessica glams him so he’ll forget having seen her (not sure about Jesus). After Terry lets Sam know his family is grilling in the parking lot, Sam finds Tommy in the woods nearby. They have a brotherly talk; Sam offers Tommy a chance to stay with him but Tommy doesn’t want to leave his parents helpless. So Sam brings Tommy to his parents and offers them a place to stay if they keep their noses clean.

Lafayette tries to make a V-selling deal with Hot Shot drug dealer Calvin Norris (Gregory Sporleder) but ends up getting his ass kicked. Eric flies in before things go too far, closes the deal and escorts “RuPaul” off the property. In the car, Eric receives a call from Pam who advises him the club is being raided by the Magister. Pam warns Eric not to return just before the Magister has her taken into custody.

Eric shows up at Fangtasia just as Pam is being tortured by the Magister. Pam throws out Bill’s name (as the V seller) in lieu of the Queen and Eric goes along with her. The Magister threatens to kill Pam in two days unless Eric finds Bill.

Russell, Lorena and Bill take a ride, stopping outside a strip club. Russell orders Bill to procure dinner. Russell excuses himself, telling Lorena he has an errand to run and if he’s not back in time, they may start without him.

Sookie puts on another idiotic persona and does shots at Lou Pine’s, unrecognized by the moron who had his paws on her the night before. Alcide’s ex-girlfriend Debbie lets her jealousy out; Alcide and Debbie fight until Sookie steps in to tell Debbie Alcide is there to save her. Cooter demands Alcide leave but Debbie wants Alcide to stay so he’ll see that Debbie is committed to Cooter. Just when we’re wondering how stupid this scene can get, Russell shows up, announcing in German to the bar full of weres that “Now they shall drink the dark wine.” He bites his own arm and drips blood into a tray full of shot glasses which are passed out to the patrons. All the weres drink on Russell’s command as he makes a toast to their “collaboration”, then leaves them to celebrate. Sookie and Alcide exchange confused glances. Debbie is held down and branded by the weres, then her wound licked by Cooter just after he changes to a wolf. As all the weres begin howling and shifting, Alcide warns Sookie to run.

Bill heads into the club to find someone “ethnic” as requested. Bill buys a drink for a stripper, glams her and finds she has no family nor much will to live. He takes her out to the limo for a party, which is just another way of saying the three vamps will share her as a meal. As he’s headed into the vehicle, Bill feels Sookie’s desperation and for just a moment, he looks panicked and hesitates. Inside, Russell and Lorena begin their feast and Russell commands Bill to join them. The stripper screams and the limousine undercarriage drips blood.

Aside from the short scenes with Eric, especially his ride along with Lafayette, (I’d like to see these two do a buddy cop show) the interesting bits of this episode involved Bill and his continuing tortured journey into darkness. Whether or not he’s doing it all for Sookie, Bill keeps thrusting himself painfully forward and I’m enjoying his dark side oh so much more than when he was just a protective boyfriend. The good guys who never give in to their inner bad boys just can’t hold a candle to those who do. So here’s my inner bad girl saying, “Hey Alan Ball! Never let those two write an episode again!” I’d like to stay awake the next one. Closing credits: Damien Rice “9 Crimes”

Wow. I had no idea that Jack from "Lost" was in "True Blood." Based on that header pic, it looks like going into that light just made all of the "Losties" into vampires.

Interesting...

I'm still enjoying this season's episodes more than the Maryann storyline for some reason. Something about her irritated me.

And great job on the recaps, TWOP's Jacob makes me want claw my eyes out.

You are right on. This episode sucked and not in a good way.

Posted by: ericsbitch at July 13, 2010 10:39 AM

Hmm, I enjoyed the episode, but I did watch it late at night on very little sleep. And most of what I remember is Eric's mouth.

I am a bit bruised, though, from the brick they kept throwing saying "love will only hurt you. Get out while you still can."

I enjoyed the episode, though I'll admit that I don't find Sam's storyline with his family very interesting. And I agree that the scenes between Sookie and Alcide are bad, but I think it's the acting, not the writing, that's the problem. Both of those actors are very wooden and flat, despite all the good looks and great bodies.

Posted by: jimbob at July 13, 2010 11:17 AM

1. If I have to ensure one more scene with Sam's daddy wearing unwashed underwear that sags around his parts, I will abandon this show for good.

2. Did they CGI or something a different person's body under Sookie's head for the dream scene because it's perfectly obvious she doesn't have a great body but suddenly she's ripped?

3. Why did Alcide's sister dress Sookie like a minor Goth to go to a biker bar? Does this show not know the difference? She was supposed to blend in and it looked to me as if she stuck out like a sore thumb.

4. Why are they persisting in this Eric has a crush on Sookie storyline? It's completely unbelieveable.

Posted by: PaddyDog at July 13, 2010 11:29 AM

I agree—this episode was boring. And aside from Eric the vampire, I am not enjoying this season nearly as much as I did the other two.

Posted by: kimmyhula at July 13, 2010 11:42 AM

I actually really enjoyed the episode, I thought it was one of the most engaging so far this season. I did think that the Sookie/Alcide scenes were corny and lacking chemistry, but it didn't really bother me that much because I can stare at all his pretty.
Bill's scenes didn't want to make me barf with treacliness (not a word, don't care) as they usually do, so to me that's a vast improvement.
Plus the sheer insanity of unhinged Franklin was great. It actually made me care about a Tara storyline, and I have been hoping she would die since the start of season 2.
Do agree they need to nix the Sam's family plot, though.

paddy - that really is anna paquin's body. check her out in the july issue of self.

A load of shit, huh? Well, I thought the episode was pretty good. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Bill and Lorena and Bill and the stripper, and I'm curious enough about where the other storylines are going. (I'm also looking forward to seeing Jesus again... I thought we'd have seen more of him by now.) The weak point, I'll give you that, remains the whole Alcide thing. Boy is the acting bad and the chemistry lacking! I'm actually starting to wish I hadn't read the book so I didn't know how deliciously, deliciously juicy it could have been.

Forbiddendonut: that's Stephen Moyer.

Eric has always had an interest in Sookie from Book 1 of the series. Bill and Eric have always fought over her. There is obviously something special about Sookie as recognized by Bill, Eric, the Queen, who was disgusted that Bill was feeding solely from Sookie and warns Eric not to feed from her. Even the Maenad knew something was different about her; she is like crack to the supernaturals.

I do agree in that this was a lackluster episode. The Jackson scenes have been handled horribly but so were the Dallas scenes. I know it would be expensive but somehow I think shooting on location would make a difference even if they only did it for a day or two to get some real background shots. This is the second time the bar scene has blown and these scenes are packed with intensity in the books.

Posted by: TVConnoisseur at July 13, 2010 12:39 PM

Also, why do we have a pool of blood underneath the Limo? Aren't the vampires supposed to be drinking blood and not letting it seep out into the street? Who approved that ending shot? Really? It reaked of cheap CGI. Almost, like they are trying too hard with ending the episode with that shot. Wasn't the sunroof closing enough?

Where to even begin with this gigantic turd of an episode-it reminds me sorely of when Marti Noxon got her evil hands all over Buffy and turned it into...what it became in later seasons. As hot as Alcide is...the chemistry between the actor and Anna Paquin is seriously lacking. I seriously had to scratch my head going 'And she's won an Oscar' during Sookie's painful 'bad girl' scenes. As a huge fan of the books what pissed me off most about this episode...not just the fact that they're ruining some of the charm of Hotshot and it's residents-is the casting of Debbie Pelt. She was not a meth faced hooker chick...but slick and sleek and the sort of woman you didn't expect to be evil just by looking at her. Brit Morgan's crispy bangs just...irked me and reminded me that I had hair like that...in 1992.

Really the only bright spots were the eye candy and Bill's further fall from grace...not to mention the Eric/Lafayette comedy hour. I would pay to watch if they turned the show into a new style 'Three's Company' with Eric, Pam and Lafayette.

mossburn:

I looked up the cover and pictures in Self. It's perfectly evident from those pictures that Paquin has a veyr nice little girly body but it's very soft whereas the body in the dream scene was absolutely ripped and muscular to the point of 14 hours a day in a gym muscles, no soft spots at all. After looking at the Self cover I am even more convinced they did some crafty editing during that scene.

Complain all you want. But 9 crimes is a fucking awesome song.

Posted by: A-schaef at July 13, 2010 1:09 PM

I think the problem with these episodes is that most, if not all storylines don't really seem to be going anywhere. And they're just repetitive. I didn't even know Alcide was supposed to be an important character until everyone mentioned he was big in the books.

Then we have Tara being in trouble yet AGAIN and how many years of therapy is this chick gonna need? The stuff with Sam continues to be mind-numbingly boring and I don't give a damn about anything that happens to his family. This is supposed to matter?

The only worthwhile scenes continue to be between Bill and Lorena (and WHAT was that useless scene when the King left Lorena in the car? I honestly thought he was going to blow up the limo or something), and you know I love anything involving Eric, Lafayette or The Magister.

The problem is we're spending too much time on stupid storylines while the good ones aren't moving forward fast enough. The stuff with the King and the Magister and Eric is pretty interesting, but the pacing falls apart when they're interrupted by 10 minutes of Sam and his family being horrible yet again. Even the stuff with JASON is boring! Blergh.

Alcide does have an amazing body, though. Rawr.

And as someone mentioned: at least it's better than the Marianne storyline.

Posted by: figgy at July 13, 2010 1:12 PM

Seriously, WHAT do these people have against Tara?? Can't they find someone else to torture?!

Posted by: figgy at July 13, 2010 1:13 PM

i have to disagree with everything you said

Posted by: jessica at July 13, 2010 1:24 PM

Fuck Sookie and her annoying accent. Eric & Lafayette/RuPaul is where it's at!

Posted by: Snrub at July 13, 2010 2:15 PM

Ooh! But I forgot my favorite quote from last night, which I will surely be using repeatedly in my real life:

"SOMETIMES AH THANK DAT BOY'S CHEESE DONE SLID RAHT OFF HIS CRACKAH"

Posted by: figgy at July 13, 2010 6:26 PM

i have to disagree with everything you said

Even the part where Eric smells like the sea? Because I'll bet he does.

Figs - I do like Sam's mother. Out of the bunch, the actress is quite good and Mama seems like she has some real feelings for Sam.

Posted by: Cindy at July 13, 2010 7:17 PM

I agree with everything you said. While I don't belive that they have to follow the books page for page, the changes they've made puzzle me. Hotshot has been ruined. Alcide had clout and he and Sookie had crazy chemistry in the books and now he's a depressed outsider. Why are the Weres suddenly white trash? Who the hell thought Nazi werewolves were a good idea? I cannot stand the whole V angle. Sigh.

Posted by: Nickel at July 13, 2010 9:54 PM

I agree with the previous comments about the show ruining great characters from the book. Mostly Debbie Pelt. How in the hell did the decision come about to turn her into a white trash late 80s biker slut instead of a high class bitch? In fact, I really hate the whole biker angle. I miss the classier feel the book gave the club & the people in it. I'm guessing there will be no awesome cheesy dance number with Sookie & Tara either. *lol*

Posted by: Neonlexicon at July 13, 2010 10:56 PM

I really don't get why the felt the need to deviate so very far from the book. A lot of fun grizzly stuff happened in Club Dead, but it was a high class establishment. Plus, Sookie sticking around to look for Bill would have made so much more sense if she was doing it cause Eric was paying/threatening her, then her stupid ass excuse about needing Bill to break up with her in person.

So did anyone see the promo clip of Anna Paquin and Joe Manganiello being interviewed. They had great chemistry when they were themselves, so what the hell happened? I am so ready to go off this show, but it is summer and there really isn't much of anything else on offer. Le sigh.

Posted by: Morgan LaFai at July 14, 2010 2:16 AM

So did anyone see the promo clip of Anna Paquin and Joe Manganiello being interviewed. They had great chemistry when they were themselves, so what the hell happened?

Yes! I saw that! They seemed all giddy and flirty and stuff. I've no idea what went wrong.

And I too kinda like Sam's mom. That was definitely my favorite quote of the evening, figgy.

Posted by: Thijs at July 14, 2010 3:55 AM

How are you just bringing this up now? If anything, this episode in question was a billion times better than the bore-fest that preceded it. (the one ending in the bill/lorena/neck-twisting sex that was supposed to shock us all into forgetting the previous 43 minutes).

Personally, I don't think any of the episodes have been very good since the first season (or at least not up to their caliber, no matter how much I want them to be). So last episode was as least *better* in my opinion.

Also - just a guess - you started reading the books sometime after watching season 1 huh?

Posted by: mollination at July 14, 2010 9:44 AM

Anna Paquin looked GOOD in that dream sequence.

Posted by: logan at July 14, 2010 2:25 PM

I actually really liked this episode. As I remarked to my wife, "The training wheels have come off." This season has been vicious and brutal on both a physical and emotional level. It's still silly stuff, and it needs more levity other than an occasional Jason dumb-ism, but it is seriously entertaining so far.
